Australia-based research center Global CCS Institute recently quoted a paper written in 2003 by a Taiwanese Associate Professor of Geoscience Lin Tien Shun, modifying all references to "Taiwan" into "Chinese Taipei", including renaming the Taiwan Strait as the "Chinese Taipei Strait". Leading to protest by Asc.Professor Lin that the GCSSI was politicizing academic studies and the removal of the modified page.
All instances of "Taiwan" were renamed "Chinese Taipei", including "Taiwan Island" to "Chinese Taipei Island" and "Taiwan Strait" to "Chinese Taipei Strait".
Asc.Professor Lin emphasized in his letter of protest that this paper had been quoted numerous times in international academic use, having high academic value, and he felt the institute's tampering was 'absurd', and that the National Central University in Taiwan will consider severing relations with the institute if the issue is not resolved.
Geologists in Taiwan have reacted with disbelief, aside from the ridiculousness of it, also citing the action as copyright violations and it being the first time ever hearing of any change of this nature.
For context, "Chinese Taipei" (中華台北) is the 'official' name used in international events such as the Olympics since the 1970s after the diplomatic switch by the US and most countries to the communist PRC instead of the Republic of China (ROC), as Beijing rejects the use of the name "Republic of China" under their delusion that they're the only 'one' China.
The name was chosen as a compromise as it allowed the ROC to participate in events while appeasing the PRC on the issue of two Chinas and Taiwan's sovereignty.
Note: The characters "中華" (Chunghwa) used in the Chinese version of "Chinese Taipei" imply a meaning of "Chinese" in the broader sense instead of "China-Chinese" while in English there is no equivalent word for the concept.
Public reactions in Taiwan were mainly of outrage and ridicule of both mainland China (PRC) and the institute.
While Red China's state media emphasized how "angered-to-death the pro-Taiwan independence crowd was by the change" and how "many in Taiwan calmly commented to accept reality".
Australian universities and research bodies have been bending over backwards to appease the PRC and it’s just absurd. While international students coming to Australia to study is without a doubt a good thing, it is unfortunate that many international students from mainland China react with hostility when they hear of things which contradict the propaganda they learn at home, eg Tiananmen Square (I find it funny how iOS didn’t autocorrect that for me) and the whole thing with Taiwan.
There have also been allegations that the Communist Party of China has been seeking to infiltrate and meddle in the affairs of Australian academia.
Not just Australia, they've been doing it all over the world.
Also I just want to point out that the term "Chinese Taipei" is just dumb, and it's deliberately dumb because in the Nagoya Resolution discussions neither side could agree on a name that actually made sense so they intentionally chose one that didn't.
CCS is funded by the Australian government so I'd say it's in their best interests to go along with the government's One-China Policy if they want their funding to be cut.
I do hope that Taiwan achieves international recognition as an independent nation someday, but I can't see it happening anytime in the near future.
I hope that eventually the international community stops playing blind to the fact that there are two Chinas in the world like how there are two Koreas, instead of kowtowing to the CCP and playing ostrich along with them.
It's kind of startling (but I guess shouldn't be) how much power China has quietly been exerting over the past decade or so. Look at how Hollywood and the tech giants are now bending over to cater to the CCP (because they look at the untapped market of 1.4 billion people and start salivating at the thought of the profits to be had), how China's making exploitative investments in Africa and SE Asia, or all the west coast NA real estate being snapped up by Chinese buyers, or now this.
They are over here as well, breaking into home, offices of an academic recently and slashing their her tires among other things.
Taiwan is the real China, the PRC is just a totalitarian cuckoo bird that has driven them from the mainland
i know you hate foreigners but what the fuck are you talking about?
Chinese immigration is a bad thing because their government will always follow
No doubts China has Australian govt by the balls, and has for the last two decades.
