President Trump said late Saturday that he plans to formally terminate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in an effort to pressure Congress to approve a new trade deal with Canada and Mexico.
“I will be formally terminating NAFTA shortly,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One while returning from the Group of 20 summit in Argentina
“Then Congress will have a choice of approving the USMCA, which is a phenomenal deal,” he said, referring to the United States-Mexico-Canada-Agreement. “Much, much better than NAFTA. A great deal.”
He's fucking nuts thinking the stick will work, the entire economy is on the line and the democrats won't blink at his threats here.
but it will be filibustered by the gop because it prevents you from firing gays and queers.
literally could just negotiate the current deal and have it changed
he could have just negotiated the Iran deal instead of killing it like a fucking moron
but instead he's all for nothing, he basically just wants his name on it, that's it
Because this won't blow up on his crumpling disgusting face.
Polidicks is really getting its mileage out of this image.
When you know everything's on the line, break everything you possibly can before you get kicked out
Up here it's being called CUSMA. It sounds really gross.
RIP our already fragile economy
The economy being good is the only thing keeping everyone but the cult dumping Trump.
Ugh. I'd like to be let out of the simulation now, please, thanks.
So it's scorched earth tactics from him, huh? I sure hope they release him into gen pop when he's in prison.
Man whoever gets in next will have a big fuckin' mess to clean up.
He can't pull out of NAFTA v1.0 for six months. He's being a whiny baby and trying to strongarm Congress into approving his deal, because of course they're not a co-equal branch of government, they're an investigation shutdown machine and a rubber stamp factory to him.
The biggest deal in USMCA, or U-SCAM if you ask me, are the changes to the auto industry. Trump has made changes to try and force automotive jobs to come back to the US from Mexico. The reality is that the measures are instead likely to even further advance the usage of automation in the industry, losing jobs and driving operations overseas. Even before the trade agreement has been reached, GM is shutting down four factories in the US and one in Canada.
Also, this is a reminder that Trump has not even mentioned removing the steel and aluminum tariffs against Canada or Mexico yet -- which he applied to try to force them to bend over for him at the negotiating table. He is now threatening to rip apart the existing NAFTA, with or without a new deal, to try and force Congress to bend over and rubber stamp for him. Funny how a man who thinks he can grab women by the pussy seems to think he can also grab countries and his own Congress by the pussy and get what he wants. And what he wants, at this point, is ANY kind of win that'll save face after a blue wave in the House and not nearly as much ground gained in the Senate as expected.
Trump's trade war is already unpopular except among MAGA fanatics who aren't personally being harmed by his tariffs and market interference. If he crashes the economy by tearing up NAFTA he's noit going to be able to spin it as the Democrats' fault except to diehard MAGAbots who, once again, aren't personally affected.
Isn't Congress the only ones allowed to actually terminate NAFTA, and this is just Trump talking out of his ass as usual?
The President and his party get the blame when the economy sucks, freaking fantastic job Trump.
Stable genius.
I’ve been getting a lot of mileage out of this as well.

Just like the Russian Ritz-Carlton?
Honestly I'm kind of surprised a president can unilaterally withdraw their country from NAFTA, but I checked the text and all it says is "A Party may withdraw from this Agreement six months after it provides written notice of withdrawal to the other Parties. If a Party withdraws, the Agreement shall remain in force for the remaining Parties". So I guess he actually can do that.
Seems a bit weird that we need Congress to ratify treaties, but Presidents can unilaterally rip them up.
In the US treaties can't automatically enter into force, they require congress to pass an act amending the laws to enforce it. Legally even if he withdraws, the laws on the books and regulations will remain in place but obviously we don't have the treaty to bind us to it.
