I read terrible reviews of this film, so I immediately lost all interest. Then all of a sudden it reappeared on my Twitter because it started getting lots of good reviews from people. Some people have said it's absolute garbage, but then there's a flood of 'what a masterpiece!'; there's mixed reviews, and then there's super fuckin' polar reviews.
I loved it, superb film
It pussies out of making anybody in the band other than Freddie a three dimensional character because all of them are alive and producers on the film. If it had been more honest, it could've been a great film.
Rami gave a fantastic performance, but the whole film felt awkwardly paced and might as well have been a sticker book of Queen's greatest hits. I'm not an avid fan of them, don't get me wrong, but even I could tell that bits were missing. It doesn't help that the remainder of the band are all credited producers, so of course it won't show anything bad beyond "oh shit there's coke on his desk" and a montage of Freddy walking down a corridor instead of actually exploring the depravity that led to his death. Malik was fucking fantastic though, he carried the whole film on his shoulders but I don't think it was enough.
Unpopular opinion: The song is incredibly overrated.
If you love Queen you will love the movie, even if it is very inaccurate. It's basically just a "greatest hits" in visual form Those looking for a proper biopic will be properly disappointed.
Yeah, I was wondering why they named it that
Should have called it "The Show Must Go On".
I love Queen. Hated the movie for being a 2 1/2 hour long dishonest glorified lip sync from Rami Malek.
Movie might've not been all that great, but at least it definitely sparked people's interest in Queen again. I hope to see the same result for Rocketman.
Rami was absolutely picture perfect as Freddie Mercury. The film as a whole, however was rather rote and by the numbers, which was a pretty crying shame. It wasn't bad by any stretch, but it wasn't as good as I feel it could have or should have been.
It has definitely been played a great deal over the years and I understand why people are bored of it, but, and this is coming from somebody who likes writing music, the chordal structure and general production of the song are absolutely fantastic. I mean, when you compare Bohemian Rhapsody to the vast majority of 1, 5, 6, 4 progression songs that become famous, it should be fairly easy to appreciate why the song is so incredibly popular years later.
Because it's a good description of his life.
I personally think the song is just straight up bad, I don't like it at all, anytime I've said I don't get it because of how random it is and it's just a mish mash of shit, they say that's the point, to which I stand by what I say and think it's still bad and don't get it. But then I also don't like Queen at all either, especially, that song.
I thought it was like this: It's about a guy who killed someone and the phases of the song represent his and other people's emotional turmoil.
I'm guessing the reaction is that the film as a biograph is bullshit but the tribute to the stage performer and musician is good. since they remade an entire concert shot for shot i am pretty sure that is what they were going for. which is crap imo.
Did you guys really expected a tell all movie about Freddie's drug use, sex life when the other band members are still alive, and had a role in the movie as producers? Besides, find me a music biopic where they made it accurate to the bone.
i would support this movie especially with my daddy rami in it, but it was directed by Bryan singer and I don't feel comfortable supporting a movie directed by a pedophile. not like it matters since it's very successful, I'll just wait until i can rent it or something
dude, there are plenty of great biopics faithful to the story. you don't have to be "accurate to the bone" but at least some truth to the story. For example, Joaquin Phoenix.. he doesn't look or sound anything like Johnny Cash, but the film was so damn pure to the story of him as an individual which is why the film is respected.
I like it
Worst part is if you mention that you don't like it everyone looks at you like you're some insane contrarian I don't see why that song or ANY song deserves such cultish worship
That's the worst part about this song in my opinion, I don't like the song itself but I heavily dislike the practically cult following it has, you even talk negatively about it and some people just jump on you like you've just kill their Mothers or some shit.
What's not to understand? There are songs out there that resonate incredibly with some people, sometimes even huge collections or entire nations. Imagine shitting on Wind of Change as a Lithuanian that lived through times of occupation. A lot of people attach really fond memories of Freddie to the song and that's why they can't hate it - it's the powerful context that makes it so accepted everywhere. If the only constructive thing you have to say is
It was ok. I didn't know about a lot of the finer details of his life so I didn't notice the apparent inaccuracies and stuff, but as a movie it was ok. I didn't think the structure/pacing was great. It flips pretty sharply from Queen being nobodies to suddenly being the biggest band ever. Also you see Freddie talk to his fiancée like two or three times and then suddenly they are getting married, the film told us they were perfect together etc but I didn't really feel it from the film. Also at one point the editing got on my tits (I think it's the first concert scene where people heckle them or something, just some crazy fast cuts that made me wonder wtf I was looking at) But it was entertaining enough, plenty of cool scenes and fun moments, and great performance from Rami Malek. It's like a 3/5 film for me
Saying you don't like the song isn't shitting on it but the fanatics act like it is. There's this social pressure that you have to like the song, I don't get it.
The only social pressure I've felt was at typical parties, you can't blame Bohemian Rhapsody for the existence of popular music though. Other than that, the only place I've been harassed at was Facebook for commenting on an artist's post that I think their music kinda sucks, which I can only blame myself for - being a buzzkill is dull, I mean, go to a page of one of your favorite artists and see how you react to people being negative about something you really, really love. It's a bit childish and delusional to attack people for saying negative things about something they truly, really love, but surely, you can see why they do it, don't you?
the film was alright -- one of my friends accurately described it as "It's just another film, about another rock band, except that rock band is Queen." There wasn't anything alarmingly special about it, which was really unfortunate because Rami Malek really nailed being Freddie, and the other cast members did their roles amazingly well too.
Its a great song for its time, but just like Africa, Don't Stop Believing and Comfortably Numb, it gets overplayed as fuck and anyone who says its their favorite song is a basic bitch. And I love all of them.
