WHAT THE FUCK
We need to breed more of them and fast
I mean, I'd kinda like this, but the article points out that possums in the wild with this mutation don't last long, which explains why it's not a common mutation at all. If you're breeding it to be sortof a pet animal then this starts raising ethical concerns which from a purely pragmatic standpoint don't stand well at all.
I want to agree but I mean those ethical concerns, man.
People have already made breeds like pugs and other dogs whose existence is basically pain through selective breeding.
Well, pugs specifically have existed since the Ming dynasty in China, well before people burdened themselves with the modern concern of ethics in this. As much as I like pugs, lets not repeat their fuckups.
Also, iirc, modern pugs have more medical issues than before, and looked a bit different just about 150 years ago

That's just beautiful! It's actually not far off one of my possums;

(She had a baby, that's him on the right). Her name is Biccies (Big Ears).
Here's one from the mid 1700's.

And it's closer to a normal dog than those abominations you have today
If you think that's bad, look at the english bull terrier

The rise of the pure breeds as a 'fashion' and show dogs really messed up the genetics of a lot of dogs. A lot would be considered endangered and worse due to the lack of diversity.
Like the difference between a working Bassett hound and a show hound is night and day.
On the left you have a noble looking and well built dog, on the right you have what looks like a fire happened at a dog waxworks museum and the dog is still in pain as if it melted.
I've not seen a single "thoroughbred crufts winning dog" that actually looked nice or healthy. My favourite breed of dog is a German Shepard, a normal one is a big fluffy dumbo with pointy ears that is somewhat built like a wolf, a SHOW version of a German Shepard has this curved back that makes it look like an old man that's hobbling about in his autumn years and worse still the show breeds almost always develop horrible back leg problems.
Compare and contrast.
Normal Doggo:

Show breed dog (no its not getting up from a sitting position, this is how it looks standing the fuck upright)

I do not understand how this is aesthetically pleasing in any manner, it looks ugly, its bad for the dogs health and inhibits it's ability to do anything a normal dog would be expected to do.
All I want is a fluffy dumbo to be my buddy, not something that racks up hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of vet bills, lives in pain, is doomed to grow old into a life of horrible disability and gets a "Nice shiney badge" from some old sods with a Victorian-era fashion sense approach to living fucking creatures.
In captivity =/= torture and jail. It just means "not in the wild"
