Epic Games confirms Unreal Tournament is no longer actively developed

Back in September, the community manager for Epic Games’ “Unreal Tournament” announced that the game was on hold with the team on that game moved over to work “super hard
on ‘Fortnite.'” It seems little has changed since then, with Epic Games CEO and founder Tim Sweeney telling Variety that the game remains on hold.
Sweeney was discussing Tuesday’s announcement of the Epic Games Store, when he was asked what impact development of the store and the continued growth and support of
“Fortnite” is having on older projects, like “Unreal Tournament.”
“‘Unreal Tournament’ remains available in the store but isn’t actively developed,” he told Variety. “We’ve recently worked with GOG on making classic Epic Games titles available and
we’re planning to bring more of them to the store in their original glory.”
“Unreal Tournament” is the ninth installment in a first-person shooter franchise created by Epic Games and Digital Extremes in 1999. This latest installment was announced in 2014 as
a sort of opensource development version of the game. But as “Fortnite’s” popularity increased with the release of its free Battle Royale mode, resources were pulled from other parts
of the studio to focus on “Fortnite.”
While the game isn’t officially dead, the “Unreal Tournament” hasn’t received an official update since the summer of 2017.
Boooo
omg
at least they're being honest.
Boo, I understand it business-wise, but boo.
UT99 is my favorite game of all time, so I was excited to say the least when I heard that they were making a new UT that was being co developed by the community; but it didnt't take long to notice how sluggish development was going to be.
This game being shelved for Fortnite was what I figured had happened, but getting actual confirmation of it kinda sucks still.
Kind of sad but tbh I don't know how much you could improve on UT2004 while still being a UT game. That thing was basically perfect. Don't mess with perfection.
Would be cool if they let it continue as open-source. I know you can see the source, and it was supposed to be a collaborative community project, but in practice it was just the official devs working on it. Making it true open-source would be good publicity for UE4 (not that it really needs it), and let people riff on the formula more easily to come up with something new and fresh.
That sucks and really upsets me, but Quake Champions is doing a really, really good job of scratching my arena FPS itch right now. It's got issues but the core gameplay is there and as good as ever.
Seriously give it a try, there's a ton of fun to be had with it.
It's a shame but it was inevitable.
At least UT2K4 is still up and running, even if the playebase is low. Definitely one of my favorite games of all time.
we need a new unreal singleplayer adventure using that tech
I just hope it's not another Unreal 2, and actually holds up to Unreal 1
Indeed, they could have just pulled an H1Z1/Just Survive and released it as a finished game despite being far from ready.
There should always be a new unreal tournament coming
Arena shooters just aren't doing well in the market right now, why develop something for a dwindling market
Gaming is dead to me anyway.
Well, someone has to start for it to become a trend. Also unreal seems to me to be versatile
ok
It's not gonna be a trend again, because the genre is outdated at its core. By that i mean it'll have to be adapted heavily to modern sensibilities to even remotely appeal to the fortnite generation.
It's the same reason we don't get any good Point and Click adventure games anymore. Modernizing these genres will probably happen, but it hasn't happened yet and it's pretty clear it'll take some sort of genius/freak accident to make it come back.
If anyone wants to play QC with me sometime, hit me up on discord or somethin
They were already a trend, the big issue these days is that there are a lot more games to play. Battleroyale swept the market for the past two years, and anything that isn't fortnite is gradually dying.
Biggest one right now would just have to be blackops 4, which could be argued about how it fits into the genre.
A better competitor, Quake Champions is also free to play, they're numbers are going down ever so slightly every week, I'd take that a lot of diehard fans are still playing it, even I played it for only a week.
Unreal engine itself is also avalible of github if you have the liscence for the engine, which also grants you access to UT's source. So if people wanted to develop UT, they've had the power to, and even when people could freely download the game, no one really did.
Speaking of Quake Champions, I'm really surprised at the direction they're taking with the updates. They made all the champs the same health, with a -25 or +25 in armor as their only stack difference. They also nerfed every active ability. There's a classic instagib mode where everyone is forced to play the same character and with no abilities. It's pretty cool.
They realized how fucking awful the basic design of the abilities is and they're nerfing them en masse. It's really nice.
I don't really mind the abilities, I just wish less of them were just "press E to kill someone". Scalebearer is a really good example of this.
They actually accidentally made Scalebearer way too strong in the latest update and he's impossible to play against right now.
To be honest I'd play the fuck out of a battle royale game with Quake or Unreal Tournament sensibilities where all the bullets are projectiles that take time to travel and can be dodged with smart movement.
I completely forgot this was a thing tbh.
Shame it died.
I thought this was already confirmed but now with Sweeney saying it its like triple confirmed cause he counts for 2. Sucks too cause the latest UT was showing potential to be the best in the series with its core gameplay imo. Kinda wish they'd just lock somebody up in a basement or something and just get him to make the game idk
ah well like whoever else said it im too lazy to scroll up and check who, spam me on Steam if you wanna play some Quake Champions or erp to the one man confused, please do not message me for erp
Oh thats a shame, but considering it barely got the spotlight from Epic since few years ago this was bound to happen
I guess ill go back to UT2004
Shazbot
Woohoo!
it makes sense for epic to put all their resources into milking the biggest cash cow game in history. Just hope eventually they get enough stored in their warchest to eventually send a team back to unreal tournament and make it what it deserves to be.
