Battlefield Franchise Megathread V
While the veteran 50% off sale seems to have been cancelled, I can confirm that Battlefield V did just go on sale again, standard edition is now $40 on Origin, Deluxe is $53 (both USD and on PC)
Well I sure am curious to see what they'll do with this game if they've sold so poorly they have to keep putting it on sale such a short while after release.
I sorta doubt they'll be abandoning ship completely as the next gen of consoles are on the horizon and it wouldn't really make a whole lot of sense to follow the current 2 year release cycle and end up releasing the next title a year before the new consoles come out. In the most optimistic view, they'll probably keep supporting the game for 3 years this time around instead of 2 and even if resources are pulled back, the game should at least receive enough polish and content in those 3 years to be considered complete.
With that said, shit's super volatile atm and I'd hate to see a solid core game like this get shafted thanks to factually dogshit marketing.
I'm sure the game will recieve just enough support from DICE and EA financially to get by, but this feels like the kinda situation which would normally have EA shut down the company and move on to something new. I doubt they'll actually get rid of DICE though but I dunno, I'm not confident in EA's decision making at all, it seems to be purely driven by financial success.

I have a tiny bit more faith in EA these days judging by the lack of Premium and also a recent announcement for a remaster for the original 2 Command and Conquer games, a series which hasn't had a good game in over a decade and was reduced to mobile shit, so this small part of me believes that EA isn't quite the same evil shitbags they once were. I know that Battlefront 2 and their recent sports games have had major bullshit things but I still feel like maybe EA might be letting devs like DICE give a little more care to their actually good games and letting their other shit like the sports games with the fans that don't care take the heat and do the heavy lifting.
ofc BF5 was rushed but I think they just needed a new game out the door after the lukewarm post release reception of BF1 + paid maps is going out of style fast. I know Im being super optimistic about EA but if EA will give me a C&C 1 Remaster from fucking nowhere with the original devs from 1995 then I think I've got a small right to be optimistic about EA
Gewehr 43
Turner SMLE
bully mode activated
Why did BF5 sell so poorly? It couldn't have been just the political stuff
Have to wonder how the use of the Origin Premium subscription is accounted for in terms of sales. Technically I haven't bought the game yet, either.
I think it sucks because they clearly had this idea about sort of game as service with several years of support. Not completely unlike siege. EA will not give them that chance. Support might end at end of 2019 though I'd like to be optimistic because Siege eventually turned it all around and if EA can just believe insomething similar happening to BFV then it will end up good.
Shitty marketing and not all that much content at launch probably made a difference too.
Also, I can't speak for everyone but I wasn't at all into going back to World War 2 at first. I was still feeling fatigue from the early - mid 2000's where the market was saturated with WW2 games. After playing and really enjoying the beta I decided to get the game anyway though and honestly it's turned out to be one of my favourite Battlefield games since BC2.
I was originally excited to go back to WW2, but I was really disappointed at the factions on offer. I wanted to play out the Liberation of France, I wanted to hit the beaches in Normandy, I wanted Kursk, Khalkhin Gol, Anzio, hell maybe even Operation Torch. Having just Brits and Germans feels boring, especially since we did get to see French and American forces teased for war stories, but none of them are present in multiplayer currently.
I think the idea with tides of war was literally to try to go somewhat along with the war. I mean they kind of funked it with having so much late-war equipment available immediately but whatever. Doesn't make sense with no french tho. I'm hoping for soviet and US troops before they have to close down though.
The ideas was nice but pooly executed. Beside not having proper factions, they shipped the game with weapons and tanks from later in the conflict. I know it's all fine and dandy, but the excuse of going chronologically holds very little ground.
I might be the minority but i gotta say i just don't give a shit about the factions. I barely notice which one i'm playing as because i'm more focused on enjoying the gameplay. Same with BF4, same with BF1. In fact in Hardline i found the seperate faction loadouts more obnoxious than anything.
Yeah I agree. They should've stuck to the proper timeline, everything wouldve been more impactful then.
They could have done a way better job with a WW2 atmosphere. Most of the time the period the game is set in doesn't really 'pop' for me and I could be playing anything.
That's probably why, tanks would be really vulnerable to bombers if the flight ceiling wasn't low.
Have you tried it? It's stupid, it has to be a mistake.
They nerfed planes way too much imo. AA has become too powerful and planes can't do anything anymore. The bomb cooldown is too much as well and only triggers once you've hit the supply station.
It's a textbook overnerf. I feel they saw all the people complaining about bombers and whacked all planes with the nerfhammer too hard.
the JU88 wasn't even bad at all. It felt OP because nobody knew how to counter. It only now just got to the point where people were figuring it ou
So do you guys think that we might one day see Pacific theater naval battles? They were without a doubt my favorite part of BF1942. Nothing else I've played since then has gotten close to the feelings I'd get when I'm running around on deck desperately repairing our destroyer while we chip away at a fucking Yamato, all the while having teammates pile into landing craft to storm the beach on Midway. I miss the proper mix of air-sea-land that the series started with.
I know they can do it, but I'm also concerned that DICE would spend way too long detailing the living shit out of a handful of ships and then find that the servers couldn't handle them moving or something. They have probably the best tech artist and programming team in the industry, so if anyone is going to make that kind of gameplay work, with AAA detail, it'd be them. They just need to fuckin do it, already.
They already have naval battles in BF1, it's just super arcadey and not very satisfying. I don't have high hopes for them doing a better job in BFV if they go there.
TBF, they did a good job of making tank combat in BFV very satisfying, they could probably do the same with ships.
Like, even with the Tides of War shit the game is still lacking tons of content that should be there.
Yep, would have been fantastic.
They also screwed the pooch massively in terms of vehicles and actual consistency. I know it's an FPS above a realistic shooter, but it kills me to have Brits in American inspired uniforms jumping from a German plane to attack a place.
Same goes for tanks and such, why do we have the Valentine AA and a Churchill with casement, when they could have used actual production AA vehicles and a tank that was actually used in the war, rather than being made and left unused.
I know I am complaining, the game is legitimately really fun, with great gunplay, but the gall of EA to claim it is in any way realistic is crazy.
The war stories drove me mad though, there are so many legitimate war stories they could have chosen that kept the equality theme they tried for - French resistance fighters? Mariya Oktyabrskaya for a tank campaign? The night witches? Polish resistance? I feel that the Norwegian campaign being boiled down to a ninja teenager looking for her mum totally ignores the memory of the Norwegians who participated in Operation Gunnerside.
the biggest sin of the war stories are ultimately that the only friendly forces in each seems to be literally 1-2 persons. And that's insane. Even with the seemingly covert ops focus, these ops usually required dozens if not hundred to pull off properly. Annoys the shit out of me.
I completely disagree. The only practical counter was the Spitfire with cannon/8x 303 upgrades and if you didn't have that, or your team didn't have a good pilot, you were going to spend the rest of the match getting farmed.
They did fuck up the nerfs though. Literally no one was asking for fighter nerfs. If anything they wanted the Spitfire upgraded to BF-109 levels. Somehow fighters come out worse than bombers with this patch when bombers were the only issue.
I can't fucking wait till this game just dies because EA panics and kills it because of their own fucking incompetence, like the pathetic slow release of content for Battlefront 2
