Capcom is introducing "sponsored content" to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition on December 11th to promote its purchasable bundles, costumes and the Pro Tour. You'll see them on costumes, in certain stages and on pre-fight loading screens. This isn't concerning by itself (many real sports have ads, after all), but Capcom goes out of its way to discourage you from turning the ads off. While you can switch off ads, you'll lose extra Fight Money and access to sponsored material like costumes. In essence, you'll have to either live with the ads or accept that you won't unlock as much content as your ad-friendly peers. And this wouldn't be such an issue if players hadn't already paid full price for SFV on top of add-on purchases. While Capcom isn't running third-party ads (at least not at this moment), the move could be annoying if you've already spent a lot on the game and would rather not see further sales pitches.
FuC[k]apcom.
The ads will be more hype than the gameplay.
Ah yes, a world where you get penalized for not watching ads. I'm sure everyone thought that one Black Mirror episode that did it looked like heaven on earth.
Oh god they're gonna be like those shitty phone game ads where they're basically games in themselves.
Christ capcom, you have two games, two very important games coming up next year. Don't pull shit like this and scare people.
capcom just can't stop being a buncha fucking idiots, who woulda known.
I mean they were going through pretty serious financial trouble for quite some time. To me, it looks like they're basically milking Street Fighter to fund their other games(namely the recent Resident Evil games), most of which have had little to no microtransactions within them. It's kinda shitty for Street Fighter fans of course, but if it allows them to keep making financially risky games like RE7, and the RE2 Remake, it's a pretty good trade-off lol. You have to remember that they aren't some publishing juggernaut like EA and Ubisoft with essentially limitless coffers; one failed AAA game and they could go under.

I don't mind if these are extremely small things or simple banner ads or whatever, but I could imagine the annoyance of having to watch a 15 second clip every time you are done with a match.
The greed of companies knows no bounds... Seems like somebody needs to add to the meme image where current games are sliced up by DLC and pre-order etc. but with the addition of "ad locked content". Just writing "ad locked content" is painful.

Gonna be interesting to see how this figures into the PC version. Because doesn't Valve have a rule against advertisements in games? Or does that only apply to Free To Play games?
They are currently just decals slapped on characters and stages. It sets a bad precedent but it isn't 15 second ads like anybody who doesn't read the article thinks.
I still fear the day google lets android apps access your mic and front facing camera so they can make sure you're really listening to and watching ads
Oh cool, so AAA games are even closer to having every aspect of a shitty free to play mobile game but not having the decency to make it free or get rid of existing business models This is going to escalate pretty quickly into something even worse than just decals if people dont raise concerns about this now
Then the condemnation escalates with it. I just don't like uninformed outrages.

I think ads are ridiculous no matter the form if you've just paid full price for a video game. It's just amazingly disrespectful towards fans. Then again, Konami doesn't really give a shit.
I can do with product placement but yes traditional ads are generally unacceptable for premium games. If they leverage another step then they can honestly go to hell.
It does, but when it makes them the extra dollar there's no way they would willingly turn it off no matter how loud we tell them to stop being dicks I'm not outraged or anything, we've already seen stuff that cant possibly get worse get worse, so my obvious assumption about this is to be suspicious about it because its likely to get worse Besides in game ads like this whether if its a DLC content or product placement isnt anything new, and it's shitty back then as it is now
The man on the left has given up all material wealth and fame to live as a vagrant in the continual quest to perfect his martial prowess; Specifically turning down anything other than food as a reward for won fights, and only then to make sure he doesn't starve to death. He now has advertiser logos crudely pasted onto his default textures like an amateur modder trying to replicate a Nascar driver.

Nah fuck that, not when it's a product that was paid for. F2P games sure but even the smallest ad in a bought game needs to be fought back against.
Jesus Christ, this clashes so much with the rest of the characters, look how new it looks compared to Ryu's hobo kimono
People already experimented with this concept on community TF2 servers years ago. Rest assured, they were some of the most hated servers to ever exist. Even the mere mention of the name "Pinion" is enough to send people into a seething rage.
People didn't pay for this game just to be advertised to. When people buy a product they want that product, they don't want ads inside of the fucking thing they just paid for. If this were some F2P game I might understand, albeit I would still think its stupid, but this is a AAA game. This isn't early access and Capcom aren't some poor indie dev needing additional funding. This is straight up greedy, exploitative, and sets a bad precedent for the rest of the industry and their fan base. In fact, have a quick reminder that Capcom is doing more than well and doesn't need this shit: they released Monster Hunter: World, which has been an overwhelming fucking success. They are about to release DMCV and the Resident Evil 2 Remake. Those two titles alone will make some serious bank next year. There is absolutely no logical reason to do this besides some bean counters figuring out they can squeeze some more cash out of their poor customers. At least we got the new Mortal Kombat coming out soon. Hopefully that won't be a damn train wreck like this is.
