I wish we would just ignore all of this slicing and dicing of the population and instead make everything, at least as far as university admissions go, be based on merit.
In order to achieve this we need the following:
Affordable admissions (Money shouldn't be a requirement for good education)
Accessible admissions (Merit from disadvantaged areas should be equally considered)
A tiered university system (Different universities for different levels of merit)
More universities (Students shouldn't have to deal with over-packed classes)
Great care given to the way we evaluate merit (Merit based selection is only as good as the accuracy of judging merit)
Attempting to do a balancing act based on an inter-sectional analysis is not only unsustainable, but also counter-productive. Maybe I am wrong on this, but this is the way I see it.
How about you just... not focus on admitting one group of people and instead focus on admitting those you feel meet the standards of your University?
If you keep focusing on one minority, within a few years you'll create an entirely new minority.
I don't like affirmative action, but if there is going to be it it needs to be based on poverty level, not race.

I have no doubt, but there are people who are minorities coming from rich families who should get no leg up and people who are from dirt poor families who get no help because they're not a minority.
Because it's incredibly easy for factors out of control of some racial minority groups for them to be kept out of universities based solely on merit. A good example is the lack of funding there is for inner city schools in the US.
Sort of, but there's a correct way to approach that, and a backwards way.
Awarding affirmative action incentives to low-income students, and therefore disproportionately awarding financial aid to racial minorities, is 100% okay.
What isn't okay is doing what the University of California system did, disproportionately admitting racial minorities before considering income. Which led to the UCs being absolutley flooded with rich Asians, and the system having to backpedal and overadmit white students last year in order to keep the demographics from skewing too hard.
No clue what my university is doing, as it seems 75% of students here are either rich Asians that take pictures of bins (no, really) or southern white girls. For reference on the latter, that's British 'southern' so imagine pompous accents and mannerisms, a striking resemblance to the caricatures from shows like TOWIE, and so much designer clothing that I feel like out of place if I don't wear something that isn't at least £100.

Anglo-Saxon countries are weird, they have this fixation on race whereas here it would be unthinkable to so much as have to write your ethnicity or religion on a census. Anything other than race agnosticism would run against the values of the Republic.
its sort of understandable when you consider that minorities in those countries were really heavily oppressed by society and law up until the 60s or 70s and that's still having long lasting effects on them
France is no different in that regard, we used to be a colonial empire as well. We have lots of minorities that still today make for a large part of the poorest populations.
We just don't tackle the issues in the same way. I'd say we have more egalitarian values.
For instance, when it comes to education, public universities are open to everyone, no selection. Or at least it used to be this way before last year's disastrous reforms.This is a socialist policy put in place because higher education was deemed a right and thus nobody should be denied it, shall they want to pursue it. You may also get state scholarships depending on your family's income.
The most prestigious schools still select their students, but they (are supposed to) do so based entirely on merit, race quotas are a completely alien concept.
Of course, "merit" isn't something you can objectively measure at the end of high-school, and so the upper classes are overrepresented in there. But the proposed solutions range more from giving better funding to schools in disenfranchised areas or even sensitizing the lower classes to the possibility of pursuing higher studies (self-censorship being a significant factor) than swiping the problem under the rug, as seen here.
let's be honest, they're not doing this because they're worried about demographics. They're doing this because universities want ANYONE to pay them a shitton of cash for providing fuck all but a piece of paper.
The uni memescam is running out of steam. people are beginning to see there's no point to going and all of the top 10-30 universities who grew fat on students who weren't really in it for the course are now worried about their finances.

I always have to wonder when these diversity studies are done upon institutions do the ever stop to check their race proportions vs the actual census data of the area they draw their people from.
Say if some factory up in Wiggin has a racial profile of %65 white British, %15 Asian/Indian, %10 Afro-Caribbean and %10 Eastern European some diversity group might highlight that as a discrepancy but if yopu then compared that to the racial census data for Wiggin and found that it was about the same proportions in the general population is it really an issue of diversity?
Not that I am opposed to giving a helping hand to people who need it but sometimes I wonder if people are looking at incomplete information and drawing flawed conclusions.
Also France have a longer history of racial minorities reaching prominent positions in society compared to the UK. Like, I can't think of any people from the UK during the 1700s - 1800s that compare to these two guys. Not that France is perfect, both Chevalier and Dumas where the result of France colonization but at least they managed to make something out of themselves in French society, doing that in England at the time would be unthinkable.
