President Donald Trump's meeting with Democratic congressional leaders Tuesday turned into an argument before it really began, as the president said he would be "proud" to shut
down parts of the government over his proposed border wall.
In a remarkable spat in front of television cameras, the president, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer jabbed at one another over
immigration, government funding and November's election results. The spat threatens already delicate talks to keep the government open past a Dec. 21 deadline, when funding for
seven government agencies will lapse.
At the start of a meeting among the leaders, Trump repeatedly touted his proposed border wall, one of his top political promises. He seeks $5 billion to fund it in a year-end spending
package, a demand Democrats do not want to meet. He repeatedly claimed large portions of the wall have already been built, though Congress has only passed funds to construct new
or repair existing fences.
After more back and forth about votes, Schumer said "we do not want to shut down the government." He touted a bipartisan Senate proposal to put $1.6 billion toward border security,
but not a wall as Trump seeks. Schumer said the U.S. can achieve border security without a wall, which "doesn't solve the problem." The president snapped that "it totally solves the
problem."
After more squabbling in which Trump accused Schumer of letting funding lapse earlier this year, the president said he would take the blame for a shutdown over immigration.
"I am proud to shut down the government over border security, Chuck. … I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down," the president said.

:doubt:
Democrats never get blamed for the shutdowns and federal employees favor the democrats anyways
Forget brainwashed, part of the cult, etc. Anyone who takes Trump's threats and whining and spins them somehow into something positive is straight out braindead at this point.

Trump is very cool and smart about shutdowns! Unlike Unoriginal Obama who can't even shut a door properly!
Glad to see Trump still thinks, over a year later, that he can use government shutdowns to get what he wants when even Republican-red Congress doesn't want to give it to him. What a fucking tantrum baby.
At least he's learned and isn't trying to play the "I'll shut the government down and everyone will blame the Democrats" card, because he's learned from last time, where people did not blame the Democrats.
It's not clear from the clip in the OP but if you watch the whole thing, the reason Schumer isn't looking at Trump is because Pelosi is off camera to the left and he's looking at her like 'holy shit this boy is really doing it lmao'
Funnily enough, I found that image on an article explaining the galaxy brain meme.

Wouldn't the shutdown take place during Christmas and possibly New Year's Day? If so I think he is yet again trying to spin being an uncaring self centered shit nugget into a positive by claiming responsibility for the shutdown this time. HE probably sees it as a good thing to take credit for preventing people from spending the holidays with their family.
He explicitly said he was going to take the blame and not the dems? Just after articles starting popping up about how congressional republicans are considering abandoning?
I feel like self goal is a bit of an understatement here.
Of course he won't blame the Democrats, he's talking with one in the room. If he were just talking with his yes-men he'd be blaming the Dems all day long.
I liked Pence's expression the whole time.

If funding lapses, it would be the third government shutdown this year.
So much winning. Please stop winning Mr. President.
this many government shutdowns makes me wonder why we even have one
Both of the faces in that thumbnail describe 90% of my reactions to any new thread on Trump.
I love the annual "Am I going to get paid this month?" game. Being a federal employee is horrendous when the government shutdown is used like a damn weapon. Stop. Just fucking stop, I can't take this shit anymore.
Supposedly the first one back in January was instituted due to Trump believing that it would be the same as a paid vacation, as until he learned that the shutdown meant HE also had to stay he was apparently going to attend a 2 week long fund raiser at his resort.
As was said, the other one and this supposed one are basically the equivalent of a kid throwing the cake/candy/whatever that they can't have on the floor so everyone else suffers.
As for why they are an option in general, I unfortunately do not know.
So is this another Trump record? Just how many shutdowns have other Presidents dealt out?
Do it lol, it only hurts your credibility
I'm preeetty sure he thinks its an on/off switch in a maintenance room somewhere inside the building.
That and fucks everyone working in federal positions, but trump doesn't care does he
A brief glance at Wikipedia says yes. The first major shutdown we had was in 2013. And now we've had two, potentially even three, in one year under an entirely GOP controlled government.
