• Floating Garbage Collector is Garbage at Garbage Collecting

https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/environment/a25442808/ocean-cleanup-not-working/ The ocean holds hundreds of millions of tons of plastic, and none of it is going anywhere anytime soon. That’s especially true now that the only major project to clean up the oceans has failed. It turns out a test project launched three months ago designed to collect ocean trash hasn't collected much of it at all. It’s possible that the underlying assumption of the entire device is wrong. Perhaps the boom doesn’t get pushed faster by the water and wind, so it never has a chance to collect plastic. Another possibility is that the boom is too short, and vibrations at the ends push trash away. Either way, the easiest correction is to make the boom longer, and with luck, that will fix the problem. The newest of the new plans to remove marine .. This thing is an exercise in great fund raising and viral marketing, while ignoring the concerns of scientists who are experts in the thing you're claiming to save. ~But at least they're doing something about it~
That reminds me, I have a great idea on how we can save elephants from being driven to extinction by the ivory trade. It's called: nuke the fucking planet. Now nobody will kill elephants for their ivory anymore, because everyone will already be fucking dead. (I wish this was 100 percent sarcasm, but given that we just had an article less than a month ago arguing that we should have a small nuclear war to slow global warming, it sadly isn't.)
Whats with all the super edgy comments on this forum now?
Go to sleep, it's already past 9pm
Save the elephants from being driven to extinction by the ivory trade by driving them to extinction via nuclear holocaust. Technically you did solve your original problem so big ups my dude
A lot of people have lost hope or fallen into ideological bubbles and fail to realize it and lash out accordingly
I wish Mr. Trashwheel was my dad.
It's subtly happened but people are forming ideological bubbles and only interacting within those groups, you can see it happen in real time when a thread is posted with little actual substance worth discussing, but it makes a 6+ page thread because other people are thinking wrong.
Great, its killing jellies too. What a fucking catastrophe. Anyone who donated to this should be ashamed of themselves.

Up here in the Adirondacks of New York where there's logging the logging itself is really important for deer populations. The trees get logged then replanted and while they're in the process of being logged out or during the regrowth part a lot of brush and leafy greens end up growing up in the massive plots of open land because of the increased sunlight. The deer in turn end up either eating the tons of leafy greens leading to population growth or use the brush as a bedding area of sorts and as cover from the elements and predators n shit. tl:dr: bulldozing the forest can actually help deer. Obviously don't go doing shit like bulldozing the rainforest or your local aged hardwood forest but in some cases it's beneficial.
Unfortunately this sound about like most kickstarter projects promising to chance-the-world TM. Ideas guys and marketing run a muck without understanding the fundamentals or talking any constructive criticisms. If they want to recover this, yea talking to experts and installing a Mr. TrashWheel would probably be the first steps.
I find it funny that you and other people like you would even consider mass genocide just because a bunch of people, proportionaly speaking, are killing whatever animal. I don't know. It just strikes me in a funny way.
GC.Collect();
???. When I meant it wasn't 100 percent a joke, I meant, that other people have non-sarcastically suggested nuclear war as a solution to massive environmental problems. You all seriously thought I was even slightly recommending that shit? No way, jose.
Holy fuck, has this forum entirely lost its ability to detect sarcasm?
Nuclear war was not suggested as a solution -and nobody sane enough will ever do that- to massive enviromental problems. It was suggested it could help cool the planet in the remote case it happened, which is a totally different situation. Also, it's heavily implied that while it could help cool (notice the word could) the planet itself, there isn't a comprehensive study on the effects of radiation fallouts, contamination and other stuff that could actually help accelerate the process of warming, at least in an indirect way. As a suggestion: never take any article talking about anything for granted, specially one with the word suggest (and it's derivatives) on the main title.
you start seeing a bit too many comments like those not being sarcastic whatsoever and at the very least looking to be very real outside of here I still see those on facebook coming from edgy girls that sound like part time activists that outside of that ask daddy for money to buy the latest iPhone or drive his huge engine'd Merc
Sarcasm died when people continued saying stupid things without the sarcasm, circa 2016. See also: irony.
The real irony here is, people are complaining about ideological bubbles, then immediately make an ideological accusation about somebody based on their own preconceived opinions.
I guess I thought I was at least well known enough that people knew I wasn't one of the members who said unironic bullshit just to get people riled up. I've actually never even been banned once, let alone for shitposting. (Not counting the toxx clause I fulfilled.) Ultimately though, this problem stems less from any single member, and more from garry's decision to lax the rules to such an extent that moderators can't get rid of shitposters nearly as quickly as they used to.
Can we start a new religion and have Mr Trash Wheel as the god? We can hold ritual ceremonies where he stares into your soul with his big googly eyes and if Mr Trash Wheel gobbles you up it means he has chosen you to ascend into the spiritual realm where you become an angelic sanitation worker cleansing the wold of the unclean?
OBEY. https://twitter.com/MrTrashWheel/status/1072612000696594432?s=19 https://twitter.com/MrTrashWheel/status/1068605576098324481?s=19 https://youtu.be/21ppnNHxaaM https://youtu.be/GgnTBxSMo3g It has collected 999 tons of trash since May 9, 2014. Now there's three of them in Baltimore. The most recent one cost $400,000. Presumably if these things were mass produced you could get the cost down even lower. I think every river should have a few of these throughout the river. One of these things isn't going to make a dent in the problem, but I'd we had them on every river in the US, we could make a difference. Really though we need them to just surround China with these things
Wouldn't say a ship with a large net be more effective? Like what those that collect entire schools of fish?
That's assuming entire schools of fish frequant the biggest floating garbage patch.
should start calling them River Walles
Step 1: make one armed with 125mm canons Step 2: sells to US navy Step 3: make them do a naval blockage around China Step 4: ocean gets cleaned
Most plastic trash in rivers and oceans unfortunately does not float so neither the OP or Mr Trash Wheel are gonna solve the main cause. Still I love Mrs. Trash Wheel.
The biggest floating garbage patch is actually spread out over thousands of square miles, so yes.
It's also mostly made up of tiny bits of plastic, not things like bags and whole waste that can be caught in a net.
Yeah except some of us are still perfectly capable of detecting it.
