• Fallout 76's ultrawide support update is just an .ini edit that stretches the UI

https://www.ign.com/articles/2018/12/12/fallout-76s-new-ultrawide-mode-comes-under-fire-from-players This week's Fallout 76 patch saw a number of changes roll out for the game, including adding ultrawide screen resolution support. However, players on Reddit have discovered that the new ultrawide mode appears to be nothing more than a modification to the INI file, meaning that 16:9 aspect ratio has been stretched to meet the wider resolution, rather than being a true 16:9 display. The result is that, while the game appears to render correctly in 21:9, the UI doesn't adjust accordingly, stretching unnaturally. Redditor AbheekG took screenshots of the game's ultrawide mode comparing it to unoffical ultrawide mods for both Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, commenting that, "A modder without access to the source code did what Bethesda didn't in a whole month!" A number of other commentors in the thread have experienced the same result after the patch. The unofficial workaround to get the game to support ultrawide resolutions by simply editing a line of code in the INI files has been around since launch, so players aren't too happy that the official 21:9 resolution support is nothing more than a stretched version of the 16:9 display. Patch 1.0.3.10 also added a number of fixes, including a bug in the Feed the People event quest, which has seen players asking the developer to roll back the fix. The bugged version resulted in a server-wide reward of Canned Meat Stew regardless of player participation in the event. Since the update, players have taken to Reddit asking Bethesda to "unfix the Feed The People event." Bethesda has said it may drop one more patch before the end of the year, before it shifts its focus to 2019 updates, which will include new content for the game, as well as "many additional bug fixes, and more changes" based on player feedback.
How the fuck does Bethesda function.

Just wow.
Fallout 76 has gone from being hilariously bad to distressingly bad and now is starting to curve back around.
I hate to call a developer lazy because some work incredibly hard. But holy shit bethesda, how are you so lazy.
The wild Bethesda ride never ends.
You think Todd cares for ultrawides? The man likes his content letterboxed. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/441/e86c8bf5-ca37-4e92-96e4-c5a7685a16cb/image.png
The game release is bringing an impressive amount of unintentional entertainment.
Ultrawide support is so common these days, and for games that don't have it there's usually a simple hex-edit or mod that fixes everything up nicely. Even on 10+ year old games. So how Bethesda managed to fuck this up is beyond me.
With how shoddy the work is in Bethesda games, I can’t for the life of me figure out how they produce such disasters unless they entirely staff amateurs who never improve. like they seem to be able to fuck up even the most basic tasks,
Its dumb and all but a gaming news outlet using reddit as the sole source of its information is just like, what the hell happened. They didn't even bother to read more than the Op statement either since in the comments its shown its not at all an ini edit but its about as bad as one
Fuck, When I saw the patch notes I actually was considering buying it since I also heard you can go above 60 FPS now, But fuck this
Because reddit and social media are absolute pillars of human society now unfortunately. Also money
Have they done anything right with this game?
The Country Roads cover, the other original music, and the new weapons.
They rerelease Skyrim.
It's never ended since the early to mid 90's, where their Terminator games and Daggerfall were unsung, revolutionary titles for the time, but were borderline unplayable until patched. They hit it big with Morrowind, and they had ambition to keep pushing onwards from there, but the ambition dwindled out, the company got bigger to throw more artists at the more jank parts of their assets and graphics, and the coders got complacent as the ambition dwindled away. They've been due for the rudest wake up call for over 20 years now that they can't easily coast off of reputational successes and people are wising up to their laziness.
I am starting to get the feeling BGS Austin are the only ones actually working on this while Maryland is zzzzz or working on something else
Bethesda should probably just pack it up and start over at this point
They probably are working on Starfield.
Writing has improved, the variety of locales is top notch, you got some really neat giant set pieces fitting of fallout's world. Someone in the fallout thread said it best, it's an archaeology game with a dated engine to match.
I’ll have you know, that’s the ever so superior pillarbox, or reverse letterboxing. Of course, neither stand a chance against the almighty windowboxing: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/211438/219dffcb-501d-4cf7-ade2-36478e9d0bdd/image.jpeg
void Bethesda(bool bToddHoward) { if (bToddHoward) { break; } else { work(); } }
Just hire all those modders and let them fix this garbage game.
Fallout 76 was pretty much entirely done by the Austin team. The Maryland team has been working of Starfield since Fallout 4 was released, maybe even earlier.
Hey, they just said they'd add 21:9. They didn't say it'd be good.
The problem is you guys aren't viewing fallout as our god and savior Todd Howard envisioned. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/109874/e6bbdf99-ddc5-42c7-b547-5a1eab5700b0/triplesquare.jpg
Just a little further and they’ll break the very laws of nature and common sense, creating a immaculately perfect game in the progress. The universe will collapse in on itself and the intro to Skyrim will start playing...
they're still living off the Skyrim money that keeps pouring in
