I've noticed this when I moved recently to a more red area, Google has slowly been giving me right biased articles in my feed especially, it's kind of scary honestly
Certainly works in my blue state.
there are a number of factors that can lead to slight differences,
including time and location, which this study doesn't appear to have
controlled for effectively.
Hey dumb fuck, in case you didn't know: Zip cods are tied to locations. How could the CEO of one of the biggest tech companies in the world be this retarded?
After I visit my parents it takes about a week for Fox News to get filtered back out of the 'articles for you' section of chrome.
Which is weird, because my area is red as fuck and I... Don't really get that much.
It's pretty obvious that searches would vary depending on location, that is a pretty basic requirement of making sure searches are relevant to you. By stripping away personalisation during the study, they are making the algorithm have to make assumptions on less data to find relevant results, it's not surprising that this would inadvertently lump you in with the interests of people near you if your location is one of the few data points it has to compare against. It's not great that it has caught political content in the results but it isn't really surprising.
I mean everyone should know this by now, there are multiple times when google gives you the chance to either hide or change your location for more accurate results. It seems very unlikely to me that the political side of this is intentional. It takes your location into account for every road, business, or location you visit or travel on, asks you if you want to review things for other customers, make notes or tips for the generated map routes. Obviously you're more likely to get more "red" results in a red location just because there are more likely to be "red" positive businesses and organizations. Take my area, it's not a backwater bog, but it's very "red" just because of the large amount of gun/fishing/outdoor shops, so shit like gun-control or regulation of hunting and fishing is more likely to bring up negative results in my area due to the flourishing businesses that run against those principals.
