Super Smash Bros. is a fighting game series created by Nintendo, notable for serving as a massive crossover between all major Nintendo franchises and even many third-party ones. Credited with codifying the "platform fighter" genre, the series is directed by Kirby series creator Masahiro Sakurai and takes the fighting game formula in a rather different direction than "traditional" fighters. Rather than a health bar with a set amount of health and the goal of depleting your opponent's to zero before they do the same to you, your vitality is instead measured in a damage percentage: the the more you're attacked, the higher your damage rises. The higher it rises, the farther you fly when hit. Should you be launched far enough off the screen or fall too far from the stage to recover, you either lose a life or your attacker scores a point, depending on the game mode. The controls are also simplified from other fighting games: rather than a complicated input string for executing each attack and different strings to memorise for each fighter, the game uses a unified moveset across all characters where every attack is only a single button press and optionally a direction on the control stick, extrapolating their abilities from there. This makes the series incredibly easy to get into for those who aren't fans of traditional fighting games, while still allowing for enough variety and replay value that players across the world have been hooked for nearly two decades now. Indeed, the series has become one of Nintendo's most beloved and best-selling franchises and each new instalment will always be met with a fresh new trainload of hype.
Currently, there are four installments, with a fifth just released!

Super Smash Bros. (Nintendo All-Star! Dairantō Smash Brothers)
Platform: Nintendo 64, Virtual Console (Wii)
Original release date:
JP: January 21st, 1999
NA: April 26th, 1999
EU: November 12th, 1999
The one that started it all, the original Super Smash Bros. - nowadays referred to as SSB64 - was a relatively low-key release (at least, compared to the rest of the series). A pet project of Sakurai's, it was originally developed as an entirely original game by the name of Dragon King: The Fighting Game. Fearing that an original fighting game property wouldn't sell well on the N64, Sakurai instead decided to insert existing Nintendo mascots into the game as its fighters, and the concept blossomed from there. Very much a proof of concept compared to later games.

Super Smash Bros. Melee (Dairantō Smash Brothers Deluxe)
Platform: Nintendo GameCube
Release date:
JP: November 21st, 2001
NA: December 3rd, 2001
EU: May 24th, 2002
AU: May 31st, 2002
The second game in the series, released as a launch title for the Nintendo Gamecube to critical acclaim. To this day, Melee still has an incredibly popular competitive scene, and even shares tournament spots with its younger siblings! Helped introduce a lot of features that would become standard, such as air-dodging, side special attacks, a unique Single-player "adventure" mode together with the original Classic mode, camera controls to take pictures during fights, and much more.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Dairantō Smash Brothers X)
Platform: Wii
Release date:
JP: January 31st, 2008
NA: March 9th, 2008
EU: June 26th, 2008
AU: June 27th, 2008
Perhaps the most infamous release in the Smash Brothers series, Brawl is both loved and hated by diehard fans. It's hated for its significant changes to gameplay to discourage competitive play, such as slipping, multiple air dodges, and floatier physics, but it's loved for its introduction of Third-Party characters (now a staple), with Sonic the Hedgehog from SEGA and Solid Snake from Konami being introduced, its excellent, more modernized presentation, and, above all, its astounding Single-player Mode, the Subspace Emissary, which is lauded for its beautiful cutscenes and weaving in every single character from the game into an epic tale involving Trophies, EVIL R.O.B.s, the supernatural entity Tabuu. While it's by far the most controversial release in this series, fans still speak of it with praise especially when talking about Subspace Emissary, or SSE. Also had a fairly popular fan-mod, known as Project M, that sought to revert the gameplay changes to play more like Melee, and re-introduced characters missing from Melee, Roy and Mewtwo.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U (Dairantō Smash Brothers for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U)
Platform: Nintendo 3DS, Wii U
Release date:
JP: September 13th, 2014 (3DS) / December 6th, 2014 (Wii U)
NA: October 3rd, 2014 (3DS) / November 21st, 2014 (Wii U)
EU: October 3rd, 2014 (3DS) / November 28th, 2014 (Wii U)
AU: October 4th, 2014 (3DS) / November 29th, 2014 (Wii U)
The fourth release in the seres, easily most notable for being the first handheld, portable Smash Bros., and introducing even more crazy third-party characters, such as Mega-Man, Pac-Man, Ryu from Street Fighter, and Cloud from Final Fantasy, as well as being the forerunner of an attempt to merge the more fast, skill-indexed gameplay of Melee with the more casual, floaty gameplay of Brawl. This is the only game so far to have two separate versions, each with their own unique features, such as the 3DS's Smash Run mode, a gamemode similar to City Trail from Kirby Air Ride. 4 characters run around a huge map, battling tons of enemies and looking for treasure to upgrade their stats. Also well-known for the Wii U version being the first version to support up to 8 players playing at once, a huge milestone for the series that has plans dating as far back as the original Melee.

New characters such as the long-requested King K. Rool from Donkey Kong Coutnry and Ridley from Metroid, as well as Richter and Simon Belmont from Castlevania, Inkling from Splatoon, Ken from Street Fighter, and planned DLC characters Piranha Plant, and Joker, from the Persona series, all show up ready to fight with the veterans. 8-player mode returns, there's a brand new story mode, titled World of Light, has you roaming the galaxies as Kirby, fighting evil Spirits and reviving your fighting friends to take on Galeem, mechanics have once again been changed, it's a whole new experience, and even in the short period of one week that Ultimate has been out, it's already the best-selling Smash in the series!
