Almost seven in 10 Australians are now considered overweight or obese, after a rapid growth in the number of young adults stacking on too much weight.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed on Wednesday that within just three years there had been 18 per cent jump in the proportion of those aged 18 to 24 judged to have an excessive BMI.
While this group is traditionally much slimmer than the rest of the population, 46 per cent are now considered overweight or obese, up from 38.9 per cent in 2014-2015.
Today, the typical Australian man weighs 87 kilograms and with an average height of 175 centimetres is deemed overweight, according to the ABS’ National Health Survey.
The typical Australian woman is also overweight, weighing 72 kilograms and with an average height of 161 centimetres.

America Electric Boogaloo
You have the cheeseburgers now.
In other news, nickname "tiny" more popular than ever.
Careful with the vegemite, Australian FP'ers, we don't want your gravity belts to break
Wonder what the biggest reason for the obesity epidemic is. Healthy food being more expensive, less convenient? Human urges mixed with an epidemic of social isolation? Lack of accepted policies intended to address it? Economic stress proritizing said convenience due to time constraints? Lack of importance?
All of the above?
I jumped in this thread just to see how quick America would get mentioned.
Except when you try to enact policies about weight people get bent out of shape because you're "forcing them" to eat differently
I can't imagine being a fat ass, I would hate myself
Someone has to be a counterweight to keep us from falling off into the void. Thanks, Australia.
A very clear majority of Australians today have sedentary lifestyles. Hell, the same thing happened to me; I used to work bulk goods in retail and go to the gym about 3-4 times per week. I was fit as fuck and had discernible abs, which is a crazy thought for me now as I work in an office 5 days per week and no longer have the motivation to go to the gym. Apparently my BMI is 24.7 because although I’m ~90kg, I’m tall as well.
Being surrounded by devices don’t help, neither does food being so accessible compared to the past. But biggest factor by far, a problem I also struggle with, is people are shit at self control.
But if this continues Australia will be the new Antarctica, and Antarctica will be the new Australia. History will correct itself.
