Looks more like a couple of those mechanical cymbal monkies lost the cymbals in favor of some weird drag version of a 50s sci-fi aesthetic.
nice hot-take
yes i'm sure the black woman who made this a news topic was the TRUE anti-black racist

I....might get the intention?
I don't think it was supposed to be racist, the red lips being just a fashion thing because of the obvious reasons, but then it came out as that thing that looks like a blackface caricature.
Seems more like a mistake by association than anything imo, and thats if you put them side by side.
I don't know, maybe it is way too alike for someone who has lived in a country where such caricatures were sadly the norm at one point in the past, so I can't really blame anyone for thinking that.
tbh I don't think Prada would deliberately but I'm surprised they don't have more people on marketing who would assume the worst reaction from people. As much as I dislike it it a large company should be relatively inoffensive.
I can't believe that not one person took a look at this and thought "yeahhhhh this might be construed badly"

The red lips are really all that did it in, this sticker set that comes with the keychains shows that it really is just supposed to be a monkey
Could Prada possibly have made a short-sighted design decision?
No, it's those damn, uppity BLACKS who are wrong.
The whole "people calling out racism are the REAL racists" thing is a dumb invention made specifically to delegitimize the speech of minorities and portray white people are being some sort of underdog. Remember that this came up specifically during the Obama administration. As I'm certain you know, Obama was a black dude, and even the whole "you're the real racist" thing isn't the only way the American right found to attack Obama. Almost all of them relating to race in some way or another. There's the birthers, the accusations that he was a secret muslim, the accusation that Michelle was a man or that he's otherwise attracted to men, and accusing his mere status as president being affirmative action.
And then there's "anti-racist is a codeword for anti-white", wherein the implication is that people who want to promote positive race relationships are the real Nazis, despite such a phrase ever only being used by Nazis, white nationalists, and so on. As if other races having nice things must come at the expense of white people.
If you're going to parrot white supremacist lies, I'd appreciate if you were to make it more blatant so everybody knows to steer clear of you.
If you see anything but a monkey character you might be a bit of mong.
True, but I guess it's easy to be reminded of the unfortunate slurs related to black people and monkeys.
Hope this doesn't get blown out of proportion, things got handled pretty well on Prada's part.
Clearly, yes.
Now, do you agree that the monkey also has a striking resemblance to caricatures such as Sambo, as suggested in the picture posted above?
Not striking, no. Vague similarity in the lips at best. I think if you want to insist on there being a striking semblance between a Prada mascot and a racist cartoon from 1700-1900 then the problem lies with you, the person making the interpretation, not Prada.
Boy do I have some news for you about how black people were portrayed in media for a hundred years
no u see if u even remotely think that this could come off as being a caricature then YOU'RE the REAL racist!!!!!

there, problem solved pareidoliacs
Both works and looks better. Cybermonkey is a good aesthetic.
They have one that has green and yellow highlights instead of black and red, and is otherwise unaltered. This is clearly unintentional - a product of European ignorance. They probably didn't have any black people working on this shit, otherwise it would have surely been caught somewhere down the line.
This looks like some sort of dystopian internet gestapo from some bad cg movie about CYBERSPAACE
