School Contractor in Texas Denied Work Over Pro But this year, all of that changed. On August 13, the school district once again offered to extend her contract for another year by sending her essentially the same contract and set of certifications she has received and signed at the end of each year since 2009. She was prepared to sign her contract renewal until she noticed one new, and extremely significant, addition: a certification she was required to sign pledging that she “does not currently boycott Israel,” that she “will not boycott Israel during the term of the contract,” and that she shall refrain from any action “that is intended to penalize, inflict economic harm on, or limit commercial relations with Israel, or with a person or entity doing business in Israeli or in an Israel-controlled territory. Amawi, to her knowledge, is the only certified Arabic-speaking child’s speech pathologist in the district, it is quite possible that the refusal to renew her contract will leave dozens of young children with speech pathologies without any competent expert to evaluate their conditions and treatment needs. “I got my master’s in this field and devoted myself to this work because I always wanted to do service for children,” Amawi said. “It’s vital that early-age assessments of possible speech impairments or psychological conditions be administered by those who understand the child’s first language.  due to an Israel-specific state law enacted on May 2, 2017, by the Texas State Legislature and signed into law two days later by GOP Gov. Greg Abbott. The bill unanimously passed the lower House by a vote of 131-0, and then the Senate by a vote of 25-4. When Abbott signed the bill in a ceremony held at the Austin Jewish Community Center, he proclaimed: “Any anti-Israel policy is an anti-Texas policy.”
You know both of our countries are good countries when you can get fired for not supporting them
I'm surprised these laws haven't been challenged yet, there's no way it can be legal to compel people like that especially on the contract level.
Talk about shitting on people just because they don't side with your political beliefs. Jesus fucking Christ
Sometimes it feels like those people ranting about international Zionist conspiracies might be onto something.
Sue the shit out of them.
Texas evangelicals simply believe Israel is holy and opposing it is blasphemy, and that supporting it will help bring the rapture and judgement day.
ya but they're usually directly supporting those furthering the international zionist conspiracy while blaming the opposition of supporting the international zionist consipiricy
How can you even ban boycotting in a contract? That's a breach of consumer's free choice.
Just a reminder that a lot of Jewish lobbying communities are trying to get laws and employment policies like this passed all over the world. The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement has had quite a strong impact in some areas.
It's a nice feeling seeing news like this when I am studying to become a teacher....in texas...
It surprises me there don't seem to be Christian groups viewing middle east as a dark place, what with that area (at least allegedly) having received so many prophet figures (and Jesus himself) to help it along. You know, not being a "holy" land, but a land that needed to be helped along the most because it had such a history of warfare and everything... Sometimes it feels like those people ranting about international Zionist conspiracies might be onto something. Those in the power elite(s) that happen to be jewish probably DO use the religion (the whole "God's Chosen People" aspect, in this case) to feel justified in their elitism and their desire for special priviliges and power. That' much is plausible to me. Obviously, the average jewish person has no part in any such conspiracy or mindset, unlike what is claimed by many of these "jewish conspiracy" theories.
Where did this idiocy come from? I keep seeing it pop up. Christians don't support Israel to usher in the apocalypse. Hell, there's a whole widely held theology that thinks Israel no longer holds any religious significance at all (replacement theology/supersessionism ).
https://www.vox.com/2017/12/12/16761540/jerusalem-israel-embassy-palestinians-trump-evangelicals Elizabeth Oldmixon, a politics professor at the University of North Texas There's a large portion of people who feel this way, roughly 15 million.
1. Don't claim the Israeli government represents Jews. 2. Isn't it the whole point of the BDS movement to implement the exact opposite policy? I feel like a backlash is kind of to be expected.
I love how the belief of Israel’s role in Armageddon essential makes Christianity sound like a doomsday cult.
You don't need to have "conspiracies" for political interest groups to exist. There's a difference whether think there's real people using the system to further their agendas, and boogeymen infesting every institution and corrupting the very minds of innocent citizens.
sometimes the only difference between a religion and a doomsday cult is numbers. keep in mind that this doesn't apply to all christian denominations, though.
That's because Dominionist Reconstructionism - aka the branch of theology that Mike Pence and most other fundamentalists subscribe to - is literally a doomsday cult. Their particular interpretation of the biblical end times has them forming god's army, and the christian messiah joining them in slaughtering everyone else on the planet. Remember that Djesus Uncrossed Saturday Night Live skit? That's unironically what they believe its going to be like when Jesus comes back.
Isnt it illegal to fire someone for political beliefs? Like actually legally protected things. I know for a fact you cant ask political questions during a job interview.
It is to a lot of Evangelical bible thumpers in the US who cherry pick the Bible to fit their agendas.
I say we build the wall, but along the northern border of Texas, give em' back to Mexico.
Beto doesn't deserve this.
Wait isn't this a violation of the First Amendment?
The main point of the first amendment is to just keep the government out of that stuff.
yeah but it's just as bad if everyone will fire you because you definitely can't live like that
Don't get me wrong, it's total bullshit. I'm just stating how the law is implemented.
When did Elizabeth Oldmixon become a foremost expert on evangelical theology? Why would you ever go to someone on the outside to explain a belief unless you can't find someone inside who'll do it? Which brings me to... You know what would be a lot more persuasive? Quoting some evangelical leaders. It shouldn't be that hard with basically every medium size church pastor having their sermons posted online now-a-days. Literally zero, count em, zero of these questions show that evangelicals support israel to usher in the end times apocalypse. Of course religious beliefs about the land belonging to the Jews play a role. I would never deny that. It's also obvious that those people think that's a necessary part of the end times, but those are VERY different claims than saying their major motivation for supporting Israel is to usher in the apocalypse.
Okay so you discredit her. Why, and what based on? Is her being “outside” enough to dismiss her claims or do you have substantive basis to go off of here? Why would her being “outside” negate anything ignorant as you say “everything is online” now? I think you reject any substantive analysis of Christianity that isn’t from inside of whatever arbitrary(yes it’s arbitrary) framework that you hamstring the conversation with. what about the Posts claims are wrong? Or the BBC? Or do you dismiss everything outright?
Right to work has nothing to do with that, right to work involves being forced to join unions for employment. At-Will employment is the term and is legal in every US juridsticion except District of Columbia and Montana.
