If anyone actually has a legitimate claim of owning this dance, would it not be NBC/Universal, given that Carlton was a fictional character on their show? Ribeiro was just an actor, and by the terms of his contract I'm guessing he legally owns jack shit of anything related to Fresh Prince.
Fucker should be honored that his character's legacy is living on in a game built for 13 year olds, not pissy and lawsuit-happy because he isn't getting "credit". Bitch, it's called "Fresh" to pay homage to the show. You're entitled to nothing.
Logically it'd depend on his contract.
Actor contracts have been shitty since the dawn of time, though, so I feel like you're probably right.
idk how much i necessarily agree with this, I agree that he doesn't necessarily -own- the dance given that it was for a TV show (similar to how the default dance is taken from Donald Faison's improvisation on Scrubs), and therefore his right to sue is tenuous at best - on the same token, is it not reasonable to expect that if the dances were created by an individual, they would expect some credit or at least a little blurb that says where the dance originates?
That said, it does seem like there's a bit of double standard because fortnite is the most popular game right now. For example, a ton of WoW dances are borrowed from pop culture but nobody gives a shit about that. same thing with a few overwatch dances. I guess the difference here is that Epic is charging for some of the dances
is it becoming a trend to sue epic for fortnite dances
whats next are gun manufacturers going to sue because their guns are on it or something
I think it's kinda shitty to use someone else's creation for your own personal gain without even getting permission from them.
Yes. You have to pay licenses to use trademarked names.
At the end of the day someone's nuts are going to be sucked.
also you cannot copyright dance moves.
copyrighting body movements.................. unbelievable...................
can i copyright the taking a dump and wiping my ass dance??????????????????????????????????
I can't imagine seriously defending copyright of freaking human limb positioning and movement and thinking companies should have the right to exercise such power.
Yes you can. Soulja Boy has outright said the reason his dance isn't in Fortnite is because it's copyrighted. There are written guidelines on how to copyright a dance and it is entirely legal.
makes no sense then if its about using weird fake names to avoid copyright........... the name of the dance in fortnite is called fresh............. the name of dance he is trying to sue for is called carlton.........
Video games tend to use generic recreations of guns with generic names to avoid copyright infringement by not accurately recreating the weapons. Alfonso Ribeiro is claiming that the Fortnite dance too accurately recreates his own, and thus violates copyright laws. If he's the copyright holder, which is entirely possible, then he's perfectly within his rights to take Epic to court over this.
no can do thats my signature move to make it so i dont have to take a break in the club
good for him. Fortnite is pretty scummy on it's policy of straight up stealing dance moves and profiting off of them
It's not like they're taking frames of video and just pasting it into the game. Animating all of those dances takes a lot of time, money, effort, and experienced talent to recreate something like that so well.
I'm two fold on this. Yeah, I feel like people should be payed for their likeness and rewarded for things they've made, but at the same time artistic expression comes to mind. If we copywrite every small detail like this, paying homage and referencing things will become riskier to do.
Then again, EPIC is CHARGING money for these emotes, so it's not like they're just making a cheeky reference. That's the biggest reason why I think the scrubs default dance is perfectly fine, nobody's profiting from it.
See if Epic was offering these dances as options I don't think there'd be an issue. The problem is they're charging for this.

To fucking Turk's dance in Scrubs

Epic is charging people for these dances and making all of the profit and that isn't right
Yeah, I agree with you. It's pretty spot on for all of these dances. Something needs to be done for the people who originated them.
Also, for future arguments, don't include Turk's dance. They don't charge for that one, and people will subvert your argument and just point that out
I added a little addendum in there after I realized that so thank you.
Doom 2016 outright called it the Carlton.

not sure if it did judging by this video to be honest
Ah you're right, I might be thinking of the video title.
While he's wrong about Doom 2016, Team Fortress 2 DOES name it The Carlton.

You can copyright signature moves and even melodic ideas if they are original enough and you have the grounds to copyright it (Seinfeld bass line)

You guys are just pissed because it's Fortnite.
Fornite BAD
I didn't even know this was a thing. He should get paid for this too if Valve is selling it. Which they probably are so
You're gonna have a lot of fucking trouble if you're gonna try to tell me that TF2 is good
At least he isn't suing Valve.
