So I recently got a machine of mine up and running again, but i've run into quite a roadblock: when i try to install Windows XP, I get a BSOD with
*** STOP: 0x000007B (0xF78DA524, 0xC0000034,0x00000000, 0x00000000)
As far as I know, this means it can't find a place to install. The only drive I have in is a WD Blue 500GB, which uses SATA connections. I know that Windows XP has issues with SATA
support on fresh installs, but supposedly the .iso I got includes the appropriate drivers, and this motherboard only supports SATA as far as I can tell.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to get the appropriate drivers or fix this issue? Thanks!

Why are you using Windows 98 installing Windows XP? Stop buying your computers from thrift stores.
because i want to have an XP machine for running older software and stuff?
You'll either need to switch the motherboard's drive compatiblity mode to IDE, or track down the SATA drivers for that particular motherboard.
Back in the XP days you either needed to have a floppy disk with the drivers on it and press F6 just as the blue setup screen appeared, or use nLite to integrate them into the ISO, removing the need for a floppy drive.
The other way is to install it from a flash drive. I know of a program called 'easy2boot' that supposedly has the SATA drivers on-board but I can't vouch for it since I never used it. This guy supposedly did it flawlessly.

Failing that, try using 'Rufus' to make a flash drive image.
Strong Bad reference?
Anyway, you should be able to find some SATA drivers to put into an installer ISO on your motherboard’s website. Otherwise, I have seen at least one pirate installer for XP with prebaked drivers. Since you have a legit key, that’s what matters, right?
@chipsnapper @ninkeo Using Rufus doesn't seem to detect the supposedly included SATA drivers, and while E2B gets me all the way through setup, when it reboots after finishing, a second after it hits the WinXP loading screen, it BSODs with the same error and reboots immediately.
I'll try doing some more stuff with E2B tomorrow, but I'm not sure if any of it will be effective.
and as for the mobo's sata drivers, the ones provided (if that's what they are) all come in .exe format, while NLite only takes .inf files. (unless i'm stupid and there's a way to extract them from the .exe)
(link to drivers)
The EXE is simply a self-extracting archive, you just run it and it'll extract the files you want. It's got the stuff you need to hopefully get it past the first reboot
would the "Samsung HD321KJ 320GB/HD501LJ 500GB Lead Free SATA2 HDD Firmware Update" be the one i'm looking for here? there's other ones for NVIDIA mediashield (RAID i think) and something
about Seagate drives (i have a WD drive atm) so it's the only one that stuck out to me
sorry if this is a stupid question
Sorry, should've been more specific but the nvidia mediashield driver (the very first one in the list and is 392kb) is the one I tried and had the files in.
tried putting the mediashield drivers into the ISO i've been using using nLite, no dice
tried another set of drivers that looked like they might do something, nothing (linky)
tried another ISO w/ included drivers that supposedly worked for someone else, nada
my guess at this point is that the drivers included with these ISOs are being screwey with my setup and/or there's something up with the BIOS or other bit of the computer (BIOS recognizes the disk just fine)
i could link the ISOs i've been using if need be, but i don't exactly know if that falls under warez or not
So you are 100% sure you have the motherboards sata controller set to IDE? It has nothing to do with connectors just the way the motherboard will hand connected drives. XP has no problems with straight up using sata connections as long as the motherboard handles them as IDE. On the rare occasions it does happen its normally with thin clients.
I've installed XP on that model of system in the past, all I had to do was change the controller to IDE in the BIOS and it was fine. (I have a job in software/hardware repair)
nForce like chipsets are a pain in the ass dont get me wrong.
E2B is perfectly fine I've been using it for years, handy for carry various distributions for legacy boot enabled machines.
Not sure if I'm thread stealing but my old pre-built finally bit the dusto and my dad grabbed another relic from his workplace.
Let's just say that this has been a fucking frustrating experience.
I tried installing win 7 from a dvd, didn't work, tried windows xp from the cd still didn't work.
Then fuck it I went for 10 from a usb and I was holding onto dear life, and the damn thing actually installed.
Its actually working fine considering its on a dual core,2gb of ram and some weird ass nvidia integrated trite HOWEVER I don't know why the fuck depending on how much minutes has passed the damn thing will give me a bsod.
WHY.
when i was searching through the BIOS, i saw nothing about IDE compatibility or w/e, all it gave me for drive options was OFF/ON/RAID, that's it
maybe if i had a better/not proprietary mobo there wouldn't have been as much headache 🤔
Odd, must have been a slightly newer one I was working on a few years ago. A lot of OEM mobos can be a bit shite in this regard, if you are unable to change this you dont have much choice.
If 7b occurs when booting the windows installer, you need to preload the sata controller driver into the winPE boot image.
If 7b occurs after installing windows and you cannot get into the OOBE (the small setup that you get after installing windows, asks for username etc) then you need to add the sata controller drivers to the windows install image.
Its been a few years since ive done this for XP but NTlite will let you integrate those drivers assuming you have the correct ones that is.
winPE = Windows Preinstallation Environment - basically a super barebones ram diskable windows.
When you install windows, its actually just extracting the whole base operating system from an image file.
If you cant get any XP install to boot, try booting to a newer version of winPE (Personally I use Win10PESE) and you can manually install ntldr and image windows to a partition.
oh my post about it working didn't go through, i got it working earlier
i got a bare-bones, normal Windows XP Pro ISO from the internet archive and used E2B to get it installed (hence why i highlighted the answer above)
worked flawlessly, unlike the other ISOs i had, and the PC is now up and running again
tldr; just get a normal XP ISO, not one that includes bonus stuff, and use E2B to get it to work. that's what i did, at least
gave you a diamond for the detailed instructions though, i'll keep them in mind in case i run into this scenario again
It was more so for anyone else who has to deal with this crap, I had to deal with setting up just over 150 laptops all with various hardware, ended up using the same image for all of them and simply headbutting my way through bootup issues. (They where everything from Core 2 to third gen i core machines so, yeah.)
Yeah disregard I gave up and finally managed to install Win 7 from the usb stick and now it runs way better than 10 and no stupid bsods are happening.
So yeah Windows 10 does not play well with old computers for anyone else with similar ideas.
