South Carolina GOP may forgo a 2020 presidential primary to protect Trump

COLUMBIA, SC --The S.C. Republican Party could decide next summer to pass on holding the party’s 2020 primary election — a move that is not unprecedented — to help President
Donald Trump’s re-election bid.
Thus far, Trump has no challenger for the GOP nomination in 2020. However, a few Republicans — including former Ohio Gov. John Kasich — have flirted with the idea.
State GOP chairman Drew McKissick told The State Wednesday that no decision has been made about forgoing the S.C. primary. By state law, the party has to tell the S.C. Election
Commission whether it will hold a primary at least 90 days before the election. The state’s GOP primary tentatively is set for Feb. 29, 2020, the second in the country and the South’s
first.
McKissick told the conservative Washington Examiner Tuesday, “Considering the fact that the entire party supports the president, we’ll end up doing what’s in the president’s best
interest.”
“We have complete autonomy and flexibility in either direction” on whether to hold a primary, McKissick told the Examiner Tuesday, meaning state parties — not the General Assembly
or law — determine whether primaries are held.
A lack of opposition to then-President George W. Bush caused S.C. Republicans to call off their 2004 primary. Republicans did the same thing for President Ronald Reagan in 1984. S.C.
Democrats did not hold primaries in 1996 and 2012, when Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, respectively, were the incumbent presidents.
These guys want in on the sinking ship. They really want in.
No surprise to me IMO, this state approaches absolutely loony levels of being pro-Trump in many areas.
Many areas still don't believe the Civil War ended and that the Government is still trying to burden their lives. The upstate is horribly pro-trump. If you go outside and mention something bad, you stand a good chance of getting into a fight.
In the OP
Quoting fucked up but republicans did it too with Bush and Reagan. It's just how the state does it for some dumb reason
There's a difference with those years, those didn't have any major primary competition while Trump is probably going to face a serious challenger like Kasich or Flake. This is just crippling any opponents to Trump.
I guess we just have to wait and see what they decide on, they've still got a year before they have to announce their decision.
the GOP's 2020 campaign is being run out of Trump Tower. there is no two campaigns anymore, there is only Trump, which seems like a puzzling move given how many people from his 2016 campaign have gone to jail now.
