If I can say one thing, is that at least Trump seemingly let him leave without attempting to destroy his career like the rest of his admin. Plus those are the least mentally-unhinged tweets I've ever seen from him.

On a tangential note, I wonder if this affects Trump's standing with the troops, if he is siding with Putin over Mad Dog Mattis.
Eh, hell, at this point probably not.
Sounds like someone didn't like the decision to pull out of Syria.

Hmm, wonder what has come up behind the scenes.
Mattis was universally respected as a military leader so it's worrying that the Commander in Chief seems to have made a pattern of disagreeing with his views.
His resignation letter. Basically I don't agree with your views as they do not adhere to my established views on America, Its Allies and Adversaries.

Trump is a buffoon and going about it in a ridiculously hamfisted way, but bringing the troops home is absolutely the correct move and I want it to happen.
Mattis leaving isn't exactly going to be a good thing considering he's not some pussy-foot chicken-hawk. The man legitimately knows war and diplomacy, the key thing he stresses is making informed decisions on whether or not to fuck the enemy up.

No shit mattis is mad, trump just served the middle east up on a plate to russian interests.
It was only a matter of time. I honestly respect Mattis for putting up for all the bullshit as long as he did, but you can only take so much. I think he's going to be one of the handful of people who weren't tarnished by this administration when its all said and done.
I wonder who they are going to declare war on when he leaves
Bolton is probably jerking himself off to the idea of him now being able to influence Trump to invade whatever Brown man country he can sink his Teeth into.
Tbh this comes across as a pretty cowardly move. He's exposing Americans and the world to danger.
I'm torn. On the one hand I supported Trump drawing down the CIA's mission to supply Syrian rebels with arms and I generally think America should have left Syria alone awhile ago since Obama missed the window where an intervention might have actually worked.
On the other hand, I find it hard to believe that Mattis opposed him on this for the wrong reasons, having read about his service in Iraq
I'm sure he understands what a mess the whole situation is - and that's exactly why he's worried as shit about what Russia is going to do in the region now that we're gone.
(Also, I'm sure he knows Trump is a Putin stooge, and he only stayed on this long because he didn't want Trump to start dropping nukes and shit within his first two years.)
It's funny watching people react to the few people who leave the administration that they can't just immediately throw under the bus. Lots of "He's a good man just not the right man for the job" sniveling with diamonds like this in between.
I hope Mattis considered some kind of contingency or plan in case Trump elects some idiotic war-hungry fuckhead to the position, like to make sure the guy doesn't start making more trouble for the world.
Yeah, I was wondering if Democrats having some power now would at least act as somewhat of a deterrent. Granted, Trump will likely have some vile creature putting ideas in his head once Mattis is replaced nevertheless, but in some other regards, perhaps he'd now have a harder time starting trouble?
Just as a side-note btw, "budgetary readiness" means "bloating the fuck out of our budget, ty for free money that's hell to audit lol"
and "improving lethality" is a nod to how Mattis is in favor of banning the vast majority of transgender troops.
Good on him for the NATO and Ally and Adversary comments tho
The Federal War Powers resolution explicitly prevents Trump from keeping soldiers committed overseas to any conflict for more than 60 days unless both houses of congress authorize him to continue. So basically, he can't do shit unless the democrats vote in favor of it, since sending troops to invade any country and then being forced to pull them out 60 days later would accomplish nothing. Like, he's been floating invading Venezuela around before, but even if they took over the entire country within 60 days, they're getting fucking nothing out of it, because they'll almost immediately have to leave wholesale. So they get no oil, no colony state, nothing - apart from more dead american soldiers. You couldn't even sell shit that to the slimiest Republicans in congress.
I don't. I'm okay with Mattis but he's not infallible. He's still a senior military and political figure caught up in the geopolitics of the region; of course he doesn't want to leave, his job is to protect American power.

Mattis apparently lasted 3 weeks shorter than Hagel 😆
I swear Bolton is obsessed with having his name attached to a war
