He already joined more 5/4s with the four liberals than Kennedy in his last term, (2 Roberts, 1 Kennedy, 1 Gorsuch)
There's a chart I read a while back which was trying to demonstrate that, over time, Justices seem to drift towards more liberal and left based opinions. A sort of 'mellowing out' as they age. This might be Roberts mellowing out further as he has been on the court for quite some time now if I recall correctly.
Kennedy also had a massive conservative shift in his last term for some reason, kind of suspicious.
Likely due to bribery trough his son, if I recall correctly.
The prevailing current conspiracy theory is that he might've been effectively bribed for his service and, in exchange, got to nominate one of his aides to his own seat -- basically turning his apprentice into a master and thereby 'ensuring a sort of enduring legacy'.
Roberts has realized what we all have known for some time that the scotus is a political instrument played by the GOP, it seems he's taking steps to avoid being seen as a reliably conservative court but I'm skeptical about when it comes to citizen vs corporate rights and matters which the 'liberal' conservative justices seem to always side with the corporation
But what if instead of bringing balance, his apprentice joins the dark side?
Well then we are truly lost.
Overall looks like the Kav fiasco had the hidden benefit of making Roberts more willing to repudiate Trump and protect the image of the court.
I'd like to thank Trump for getting into a bitching match with Roberts
