New Alien Grunt NPC (Agrunts)
Our original Alien Grunts were tank enemies that shot ridiculously powerful homing bees. They fit relatively well into the tough, cover-laden final levels of
Earth. In the vast, wide open spaces of Xen however, they became extremely frustrating to fight.
The new Agrunt is the most mobile, unpredictable enemy in the whole game besides our assassins. They'll leap onto different platforms, find a way to outflank you, get
in your face, and unleash a devastating secondary "hornet hurricane" attack. As a much-needed balance, the bees from them no longer home in
on you, and individual bee damage has been lowered.
So are they going to retroactivley change the grunts that spawn in blackmesa to these lighter types?
Or are they both going to exist next to each other?
Sounds like they will both exist, these are a Xen variant. Same with the Controllers and vortigaunts they talked about in the same update, and like the two new houndeye variants.
neat that they thought of the aliens taking advantage of the lower gravity.
I don't think they're a Xen variant, the entiry name is still the same 'Agrunt' while the NPC names for the other Xen Variants have their own enity name.
I think DOOM 2016 Mancubi were the main inspiration here
Black Mesa team is doing god's work
From a Reddit comment:
Black Mesa Developer, it's an AI rewrite, so they'll get this same
behavior transferred over to the Earth levels as well. We determined
that the original AI pass that shipped with the mod and Steam retail
just weren't fun enough to keep that way.
i doubt theyll do the jumping around in the earth chapters, but the changes to the hornets and their side dodges will probably still be utilized in the earth maps
Anyone that's tried to get the secret purple hat through Surface Tensionhas already begged us to enable running while holding objects. Turns out we need this for certain Xen sequences, so wish granted!
This is good. As someone who already has the hat achievement, Surface Tension is absolutely the hardest part to get through, because it takes a long while to figure out how to get the hat past all the cliffside jumping puzzles. (I lost count of how many times I reloaded quicksaves over the course of just 15 minutes).
Yeah, given how source AI nodes work their motion can be restricted on a per-map basis.
