McConnell's comments came as Trump and Democrats on Saturday appeared to dig in on their positions over funding for the president's proposed border wall amid the funding stalemate. Lawmakers had gathered at the Capitol on Saturday afternoon in the hopes of finding a way forward to end the shutdown, which is affecting about 25 percent of the federal government. But the White House and lawmakers acknowledged on Saturday afternoon that prospects for a deal had not increased, even after making a last-ditch pledge to negotiate hours before the deadline on Friday night. Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) said that a deal on Saturday was "probably not probable." A senior administration official told reporters during a call on Saturday that they hoped the partial government closure lasted only a "few days," acknowledging that it would drag into next week. The earliest time to stop it is Thursday, when the Senate starts a full session.

If this turns into a protracted battle it is going to functionally shutter a number of projects I'm involved with. We've spent the past year and a half working up preliminary data for some NSF grants, and there's only so much of these projects we can fund on our own. This is part of why research output keeps getting concentrated to a handful of unis and part of why the rust belt/rural America keeps getting fucked. People with money get more money. People without don't get tenure, and then low research output gets used as justification to shutter departments/cut funding which turns into a death spiral for the entire university.
