The documents reveal that the Foreign Office is supporting specialist civilian courts that prosecute terrorist suspects in what the UK government’s global security strategy calls a “rule of law” programme in Pakistan.
A parliamentary response last week said the UK government had spent £10.39m on the Pakistan programme, the bulk of the money – £9.32m – coming from the overseas aid budget.
This is a bit like the charity organizations funding terrorist organizations because money was being diverted from it's goal.
I think the UK needs to have a bit more accountability and track the money they are donating.
I think they, along with a number of other nations (*cough* SA *cough*) are really only considered allies due to either a natural resource that they have that we need/want, allow for US bases there for power projection in the region, or they have nuclear weapons and we'd prefer that we have some control over their arsenal.
But I agree, I think it's dumb that we ally with these nations/groups, as they tend to not only hold contrary cultural and ethical values to our collective own, but they seem to at times work against our interests (funding and supporting terrorists and guerrillas).
In a nut shell, geopolitics suck.
There's going to a point where it is more strategic to our moral, cultural, economic, and ethical interests to simply occupy these countries than pretend to be friends with them. I hope they get their act together beforehand.
its just their culture
Uh yeah this will come up in Parliament. Ouch - not the kind of thing the darker parts of the Government need coming out in the ocean. And this isn't even just a current problem, it's a problem of the dirty things that those leading a country will get into in the name of their duty. Much like the torture of those connected to Al Qaeda, it's always there but becomes very messy when it comes out.
