• Canada spawns its own yellow vest protests - with extra right wing populism

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/dec/20/canada-yellow-vest-protests-gilets-jaunes Amid growing concerns over Canada’s ailing domestic oil market, protests have erupted in western parts of the country, where some demonstrators have donned yellow reflective vests inspired by France’s gilets jaunes. Like their French counterparts, the protesters have organized on Facebook pages, and focused their fury on a federal carbon tax, but their grievances also include stalled pipeline projects, oil sector layoffs, and – for a small minority – the government’s liberal asylum policies. While global crude oil prices rallied over the last year, the cost of Canadian crude has remained low because of oversupply. The Alberta government has said the gap in prices is costing the Canadian economy C$80m ($59m) each day in lost revenues.
Yep, predicted it. A movement that was based on protesting against the 1% is once again contaminated by the corruption of the Far-right. Twisting and mutating it into a pathetic nationalistic cause.
Well for Angolsphere countries who inspired from the original French version, which its protesters would be every ideology who criticized Macron for economical (and occasionally social) policies.
aw fuck here we go now we watch the far right ruin another thing
The low cost of Canadian crude isn't "pathetic," it's a huge problem here. Our economy is in the shitter because of the low price of our oil and because of the inability to easily bring it to a global market. To say that Albertan oil funds the country isn't too much of an exaggeration, so it being worth half the price of US crude, and protests over pipelines preventing it from getting to market, aren't "pathetic." They're incredibly important economic issues that affect the entire country.
lmao, Albertan oil was speculated to become borderline worthless eventually no matter what, so what did Alberta do? Put all their eggs into it regardless, and proceed to blame the rest of Canada for their financial woes. They should have adapted
Am an Albertan, and I can confirm this. We shit our bed, now we get to sleep on it.

of course they'd be against the carbon tax. Because stability of employment is a halmark of the fossil fuel extraction industry...
Saw some people in Halifax doing this. Didn't know it got this extreme. siiiiiiigh
Imagine using conspiracy theories and looking for scapegoats to find excuses for your lack of success instead of taking responsibility for your own bullshit
Yea people up here in cape breton are doing it too because everyone here just works out west anyway
Alberta is full of the stupidest people, I swear to god.
I'm sure they're also the same people who complain about others not "lifting themselves up by the bootstraps" too.
I'm sure going all in with tar sands production could never ever backfire.
they can't lift themselves up because minority of the decade is preventing them from doing so/ the liberals did this
Alberta consistently elects conservatives who fail to implement the provincial reforms they so desperately need, and then they blame liberal federal governments, as I understand it. I'm disgusted beyond words that this brand of stupidity is on the rise in my country.
It really upsets me that I grew up not only to see the world for what it really is after having a youthful optimism for it, but also got to see the world shift in the worst direction all at once
Do your best to be part of a force of change. Don't lose that optimism, utilize it as a fuel for your actions.
Capitalism always tries to recuperate movements against it. Your boss takes 90% of the pie and tells you to watch out or else the immigrant will take your slice. Most people fall for it. Also once again the use of the word "populism" as if that's the bad part.
Somewhat true, not always.
