Washington (CNN) An unnamed, foreign government-owned company in a mystery court case is asking the Supreme Court to pause a grand jury subpoena it received related to special
counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.
The Supreme Court appeal comes after a federal appeals court ruling that ordered the company to comply with the subpoena, which required it to turn over "information" about its
commercial activity in a criminal investigation. The appeals court also said the company could face fines for every day of noncompliance.
The request to the Supreme Court is the latest twist in the secret case, which is under seal and has made its way through the federal court system with uncommon speed.
This is the first known legal challenge apparently related to Mueller's investigation to make its way to the Supreme Court.
"So far as we know, the Court has never had a sealed argument before all nine Justices," said Steve Vladeck, a CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor at the University of Texas
School of Law.
In its ruling this past week, the US Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia offered few clues about the company and its country of origin or what Mueller's team sought.
In one short passage in the three-page decision, the judges describe how they had learned confidentially from prosecutors that they had "reasonable probability" the records requested
involved actions that took place outside of the United States but directly affected the US.
Holy shit what is this
So. Guesses?
The appeals court also said the company could face fines for every day of noncompliance.
Oh fuck lmao
RT, Sputnik or some other Russian state propaganda front.
The supreme court could just throw the appeal out, though.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the SCOTUS usually only hear cases that have something to do with matters involving the constitution/constitutionality of something? I doubt it'd be seen unless Mueller was somehow violating the constitutional rights of a foreign business, which I'm not even sure exist...?
Either way, it's interesting to look at, can't wait to see how this plays out.
SCOTUS hears any case that the majority of justices (5+) all agree to hear.
It's just that they have so many cases sent to them that they normally pick only the most pressing ones that regard the Constitution.
Given that there are a number of Trump dick-sucking justices on SCOTUS, there are plenty of votes to push anything involving Mueller's investigation up to them.
Its possible, theirs very little precedent for overturning a subpoena. Though they could just be buying time while they track down and destroy evidence.
It will be very surprising if the Supreme Court actually takes up the case
They're thinking about it

I wouldn't. This isn't any normal investigation or court case, this is involving the potentially extensively planned treason of a sitting US president.
We'll see if Gorsuch and Kav were worth it then,
I feel as if Gorshuch has a chance of doing the right thing, but Kavanaugh will do anything that favors Trump.
