I'm looking for some opinions on a matter that has come to my attention. A lot of players have been requesting that i clear out the pre-decorated buildings on Truenorth. Not just purchasable buildings like the diner but also key buildings like the gas station and grocery store. They say they would rather decorate them themselves and that it should be left up to the player.
On the flip side, other players think the decorations are good as they prefer to not have to set everything up themselves.
In my opinion, it depends on the server. Adding perma props means those props are now dynamic entities and put more load on the server than they would if they were static. For that same reason, i cant make the decorations toggleable either unless i batch them together in which cause they won't be lit peppery.
So i want to hear your opinion.
Should the interiors of key buildings in maps be decorated or left blank? Why?
There is always the option of having a control panel inside the map built into it, hidden away for the admin only. You could spawn props this way, but they're marked to delete when you click it again, preventing spam.
Why admin only? What's the risk when normal players get to press the button?
I think players aren't that interested in making a pretty home. In DarkRP, people want a base that's secure, where they can mine their printers easily or sell their merchandise easily, decoration is a non interest. I can see how people even consider existing decoration being in the way. I'd say making the roleplaying more important would resolve that, but I don't know how that can be achieved. Instead, I recommend placing the decoration there by default and having a button to remove and radian it on demand, as suggested above.
to be fair if the control panel head all the buildings would be very annoying for the people currently living in certain buildings to have their stuff changed
But if it was individual then yes it would work to let people do whatever themselves, so long as they can block it
if its not too much trouble and people really want it, why not have two different bsps, one decorated, one not
Yall didn't read. I said making them togglable isn't an option as they would all have to be prop_dynamic which are way more expensive than prop_static entities are and the pros do not out weight the cons of the framerate drop. The possible fix was to batch the models together, but that would result is sub-par lighting and batching is not easy or quick.
I thought aboit it but that means multiple map versions which can be confusing. Having content packs for one is apparently confusing enough. I'd rather people just take the vmf and edit it for their community if they want an alternative. I'm more interested in 'What option would be the best if i had to choose only one'
Honestly, depending on how many want it, I'd just say meet them halfway. (Maybe poll which buildings are wanted emptied?) If it were me, I would probably release two versions, the furniture one first, and then lacking the furniture as it's easy to go back and delete everything.
