Why? Isn't getting out of Afghanistan and the mid-east quagmire something FP users have generally wanted for years?
Because Trump is doing it with no provocation or consulting with the generals as to how exactly pull out in the best way.
I'd like to see the US pull out, but I'd also like Afghanistan to not collapse to the Taliban again.
Yes but we have to make sure the same place is stable enough to last without us. We don't want to be there, but we also don't want to just pull out and have almost 2 decades of work collapse in months. Ontop of this, Trump didn't even do it the right way, this is the thing you make long-term plans for. You consult your cabinet, you consult allies, you consult the joint chiefs. You make a plan, and execute it, orders roll down hill all the way from the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff to the Sgt. telling people to pack up the portopottys. Trump announced his withdrawal on Twitter without informing anyone, and the military is just as confused as we are. The Joint Chiefs of Staff aren't haven't even issued any orders because they hadn't formally received any, and Twitter doesn't count.
He added that it was "out of the question" to maintain a military
presence in Afghanistan if the protection and support of German troops
could not be guaranteed, though he said he expected other NATO members,
such as the UK, to increase their contribution to make up for any US
withdrawal.
Ultimately what's the point if the UK or other nations pick up the slack? Then we're back where we started.
the differences between withdrawing in an orderly fashion that ensures stability and just randomly for no reason removing half the forces on the ground should be fairly obvious.
the US pulling out now would just create a vacuum. As we've seen happen literally every other time we left a conflict we created too early. This is SOLELY trump trying to earn some brownie points, and we shouldn't give him any.
