https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/25/us/navy-bread-water-punishment-penalty.html I'm surprised it was still done. There must be better ways to punish people.
I had no idea this was still practiced in any first world nations in the 21st century, wow.
Instead of bread-and-water, the rations of unruly sailors will now be substituted for a bucket full of undercooked pineapple pizza slices floating in Diet Dr Pepper and milk This is fucking barbaric
The reason it was still used was because it's frankly quite effective as bad as the punishment sounds, and it's really only reserved for extreme cases anyway. I think in the last 10 years of my career I've personally heard it used once, but being that it's so seldomly used was one of the major reasons as to getting rid of it, on top of being inhumane.
If you'd actually bothered to read the article. That regulation is no mere neglected relic from a bygone era. As recently as 2017, a destroyer in the Pacific was known as the U.S.S. Bread and Water because of the skipper’s liberal use of the penalty to punish missteps like missing a curfew or drinking under the legal age.
My mistake
I'd rather face the death penalty or a firing squad.
Perfect opportunity to officially use Veggie Omelet MREs as punishment.
Honestly delicious. Have this at least once a week
I'm the type of barbarian that would enjoy that sickening mess.

I can't be the only one who thinks it's hilarious how *underage drinking* can be a problem in the military.
It's a big problem in the military, in that it shouldn't be. Here, go maintain this 30 million dollar helicopter, go fire this machine gun at the range, and be prepared to shoot people trying to kill you, but god forbid you have a fucking beer. It's stupid and it needs to change.
Bear in mind that's the US, where in some places you can join the military and serve, but still not be old enough to legally drink.
Woah slow down there Hitler

Can't officially have a drink in the name of your Country but can kill and die for it. Good display of a few things wrong with the US.
I'm not sure I understand the issue. They are at sea, or, worse, guests in a country that is often going to be too afraid to subject them to local laws for minor offenses. This is a simple mechanism for maintaining order. ' Bread and water feels unnecessary, but three days confined to the brig at the maximum? That really isn't barbaric. It is pretty reasonable for a warship. Also: "When young sailors need a minor course correction, he said, instead of ordering a spell in the brig, he often orders them to write reports on works by authors like Patrick Henry or Ayn Rand." UHHH NOT BETTER. NOT BETTER AT ALL.
Old cheese and veggie omelette MREs and water is the new punishment.
i'd rather take 3 days in the brig with only bread and water than get pay docked or lose out on port call
To be honest I'd rather do bread and water. My command likes to get rid of rank in most punishments which I'd rather spend a few days locked up then a year or two without BAH. It was also common on my ship during deployment for Marines to get brigged, (or they just beat the shit out of them in private) and they had pretty much the same sentiments.
Or, you know, they could jsut confine you without the bread and water. Not sure where you're getting this idea the bread and water is needed to confine someone.
