It's something that's been asked for, for quite a long time. I do think it's a step forward for these countries to stand back on their own 2 feet. Assad is going nowhere and Afghanistans forces SHOULD be able to hold their own.
Enough of the PTSD ridden soldiers, just bring em home.
Better late than never
Except they're not and can't.
If you want a perfect world, America SHOULD have not have invaded it at all.
People are weary from decades of war with good reason. I can understand why the average American would want to withdraw. That being said, a significant withdraw like this would give Afghanistan to the Taliban and open Syria to a resurgence of ISIS and leave the Kurds vulnerable to Turkish and Assad's forces. I cannot see how this would bring stability to the region.
Our continued presence is not and will not bring stability to the region. The Taliban already control a significant part of Afghanistan and you're going to see an uptick from them whether we leave now or in another 20 years. Why is the Taliban any of our concern? They're not a threat to us, and they're not the reason why we invaded in the first place. It's not our problem.
They openly housed Al-Qaeda, they sure as hell are the reason we invaded in the first place.
And certain Saudi Arabian government officials openly supported the hijackers on 9/11. Should we invade Saudi Arabia? Al-Qaeda's presence in Afghanistan is virtually non-existent and bin Laden is dead. The Taliban are a guerrilla army that control half the country. Do you seriously believe we're going to get rid of them? 17 years of bombs has done absolutely nothing.
