The move, which nixes a 2.1% across-the-board pay raise that was set to take effect in January, comes as hundreds of thousands of federal employees are expecting to begin the new year furloughed or working without pay because of a partial government shutdown. Trump told lawmakers he planned to scrap the 2019 pay bump for federal workers in August, saying the federal budget couldn't support it. In addition to the 2.1% pay increase, the executive order also cancels a yearly adjustment of paychecks based on the region of the country where workers are posted, called the "locality pay increase," that was due to take effect in January. The move does not affect a 2.6% pay increase for US troops next year that was passed as part of the massive defense spending bill Trump signed in August. Lawmakers could include a pay raise for 2019 in a spending bill to reopen the government, but negotiations have been at an impasse over money for Trump's border wall. In a letter to House and Senate leaders in August, Trump described the pay increase as "inappropriate." "We must maintain efforts to put our Nation on a fiscally sustainable course, and Federal agency budgets cannot sustain such increases," the President wrote. Trump also stressed that a pay freeze would not affect the federal government's ability to attract qualified workers. He cited his statutory authority to adjust pay out of "national emergency or serious economic conditions affecting the general welfare."
Do you ever wonder, “How can I fire the entire federal government at once?”..... because this is how.
Wait a sec, is he really going to play the "fiscal responsibility" card after cutting taxes for the rich AND in the middle of a shutdown over 5 billion for a pointless wall?
Yep, these last few moves have been overt actions towards decimating the Civil Service caste. (So he can, of course, replace them all with loyal cronies.)
We must maintain efforts to put our Nation on a fiscally sustainable course, and Federal agency budgets cannot sustain such increases," the President wrote. Funneling federal workers pay into the 1 percent
Well the last time the civil service was corrupt it literally killed a President so Trump better be aware of that.
Really though, we can dig deep enough into our pockets to spike military spending and bomb schools in Yemen, but not to give federal workers a basic cost of living raise?
Those first two benefit the people who matter, the third benefits normal people.
That Wall™ ain't going to pay for itself!

Fingers crossed.
How to piss off every gov worker and their families/friends with one simple trick.
oh now he cares about fiscal conservatism funny now that they have to work with the democrats they care.
So if the federal workers WANT this shutdown, surely they'll want this pay freeze too, right?
Money for me, not for thee
Does all this count as evidence he's a Russian agent?
If I would believe in conspiracy theories I would say that he is preparing for a civil war
Is it possible federal workere could strike en-masse in retaliation for this?
Keikaku.
wait who we talkin' here?
Between the 1820s and 1880s federal jobs were given on a corrupt patronage system, rewarding people who helped you. James Garfield was killed by a lunatic who thought he was owed a job for helping Garfield's campaign, and his death led to large civil service reform.

hey guys remember when the wall was just a metaphor?
Every single upvoted comment is taking a dump on Trump. What's the atrocious part?
no.
Fuck. You.
This is THE weakest leader the US has ever had...
That was legitimately t_d's excuse for Trump not having a wall within his first year, was that it was a "metaphorical wall".
In this scenes context, Wilford Brimley was being a martre by severing communication with the outside world. I think if you want a proper Thing scene it’s the dog.
its weird how in an admin staffed by all these Reagan yuppies, Trump is acting exactly like Ronnie Rayguns including taking a big hard shit on federal workers.
