British Empire 2.0
Go ahead and try when the country is in the throes of recession and riots.
As with quite a lot of pro-Brexit arguments, this really relates in no way to our EU membership and is something we could do anyway We closed all our major military bases "east of Suez" in the 1960s and early 70s, years before we even joined the EEC/EU We announced a new permanent military base in the Middle East in 2014, years before voting to leave the EU, and said that this showed our new commitment to returning "east of Suez" So yeah we could leave the EU and do this, or we could stay in the EU and do this
Nah, I don't think Canada needs the UK for any kind of leadership at this point, considering you guys wanna Brexit to stick it to the muzzies and have been austerity'ing yourselves into a nation of renters who can't afford to miss a single paycheck. We don't need you, dad, we moved out decades ago.
Build bases with all that money post-Brexit right?
with what money? I thought they were broke before brexit.
Lol is this supposed to be a positive thing in the first place? How will the average person of UK benefit?
God damn you remoaners are so stupid. I mean isn't it obvious?? https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/204913/7c005046-ea04-4c22-a3e2-5edd13e1dc0d/image.png Oh wait /s just for the record
"Mr Williamson said that Brexit would allow the UK to change the 1960s policy of withdrawal from regions “east of Suez”. " The reason the UK withdrew from said regions and countries is cos they declared independence after the war you mong.
O right I forgot Brexit also cures cancer and will cause everybody to shit bricks of gold.

Can someone explain to me why Brits think they're still geopolitically significant?
That sentence is just absurd. It says the withdrawal happened at some point in the 60s...yet the UK didn't join the EU until the 70s, so how are they linked?
"We're going to be dead broke after Brexit so let's spend our last nickel on oversea military bases"
because they tell themselves that every day.
Because half the country lives in this post imperial fantasy world and believe we're still the global superpower we were 150 years ago. Add a national fetish for tragedy and you people looking forward to the disaster of no deal brexit because they believe national collapse will inspire a new "Blitz spirit" in the country and we'll achieve some kind of golden age through the hardship we're made to endure.
Looks like we'll just change that after brexit. Gotta finish those infrastructure projects we planned as part of her majesty the queen's plan for a more united world.
CFB Gagetown already exists. The UK doesn't need to build new bases in Canada.
I swear half of the Brexit supporters view World Politics in EU4/HOI4 logic.
If only real life had console commands
Haha what a bloody mong. God save her Madge and all that, but Brexit has utterly destroyed any remaining essence of moral leadership that the UK had, and there is no way that any country would substitute the EU for the UK for military or global leadership.
Because we are significant We're a UNSC permanent five member, we have the world's fifth largest economy, a network of allies that spans the globe, a globally deployable military, a strong currency, an independent nuclear deterrent, an extremely close relationship with the US and five eyes countries, influence through the commonwealth, and one of the world's best diplomatic services People think we're irrelevant, but this is not the case and not supported by any metric, I don't get where this idea comes from
And you’re squandering literally all of it
Less than half of those points are unique to the UK, though.
That doesn't make them any less relevant
It kind of does. Having lots of allies are made moot by others having lots of allies. Having a strong currency is made moot by others having strong currencies. Having a globally deployable military is made moot, etc.
He said that while “the rest of the world saw Britain standing 10 feet tall – when actually we stood six feet tall – Britons saw us standing five feet tall, not the six, and certainly not the 10.” What the fuck does this even mean?
“the rest of the world saw Britain for more than we were – when actually we were moderately powerful and stable – Britons are always critical of the governments choices and condition of the country, aren't happy in general, and certainly not inflated with ego."
It could, but it won't.
