We announced a new permanent military base in the Middle East in 2014, years before voting to leave the EU, and said that this showed our new commitment to returning "east of Suez"
So yeah we could leave the EU and do this, or we could stay in the EU and do this

That sentence is just absurd. It says the withdrawal happened at some point in the 60s...yet the UK didn't join the EU until the 70s, so how are they linked?

It kind of does. Having lots of allies are made moot by others having lots of allies. Having a strong currency is made moot by others having strong currencies. Having a globally deployable military is made moot, etc.
