The number of British citizens applying for Irish passports rose by 22% in 2018, Ireland’s foreign office said on Monday, more than doubling the total of annual applications since Britain voted to leave the European Union.
Anybody born in the Irish Republic or Northern Ireland, or with an Irish parent or grandparent, is entitled to an Irish passport – a total of about 6 million British citizens. They are able to hold dual citizenship.
I guess this is the UK's version of "If X political thing happens, I'm moving to Canada"
Pretty much. Oh, and I'm applying for one if it actually happens.
Hey, those aren't blue!
I want my monarrububug ?? emo fasindhur
Clearly they should seek Croatian passport. It's blue and in EU!
Man, it just occurred to me there' no real point for teasing comments like this anymore since Boilrig's gone. Brexit threads are gonna get hella more depressing now.
Didn't someone here apply for an Irish passport? I have a faint memory that Hezzy was there with them when they applied.
Yeah smurfy I'm pretty sure
So Ireland is bizarro world Canada?
I wanted to make a snarky post about this, but it's just too bizarre to joke about. People are seriously considering leaving the UK for Ireland, a country who's population has never recovered from the famine, because their government are mere months away from committing economic suicide just to say they didn't back down.
What fucking bizarro world did we accidentally walk into.
People see themselves having a better chance at life outside of this place, and with certain factors considered I can't blame them
Do you blame them? I would too if my family actually had ties over there. Best options I've got family wise is Australia and Greece.
With the uncertain shit storm coming I really am surprised it's just 22%.
Ireland has very open nationality/passport laws compared to most countries, coupled with many Irish people settling in the UK and vice versa I'm not surprised if many people are eligible. I've got an Irish passport thanks to my grandfather.
I'm in the process of doing so (my mum was born in Dublin to Irish citizens back in the 1950s, which makes me one as well), and I can't blame anyone else for doing it either. Europe is a great thing, why wouldn't you want to be part of it?
