After Big Ben, silent for much of 2018 due to renovations, chimed once again, the London Eye was bathed in the blue of the European Union flag while its pods turned yellow.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said the sold-out display would show Europe that the capital will remain ‘open-minded’ and ‘outward looking’ post-Brexit claiming Westminster politicians had given the world the impression that Britain is ‘insular and inward looking’.
The message ‘London is open’ was repeated in seven languages around two minutes past midnight as the city skyline filled with lights in the largest annual display in Europe.
And Londoners rang in the New Year with a soundtrack that celebrated Europe’s musical artists.
We Are Your Friends, Stay and Don’t Leave Me Alone were some of the songs chosen for the 11-minute soundtrack, which featured artists from Ireland, France and Sweden.
The message was finally hammered home as the display came to an end to the sound of All You Need is Love by the Beatles.
Brexit shenanigans aside, I wasn't really a fan of the fireworks display this year. Not my cup of tea.
Madlad has confirmed it

It makes the London Eye look more like a giant stargate.
Hallowed are the Ori
Pffft get real guys.
This was obviously just a harmless celebration of Boilrig's permaban.
Is he gonna dig up Oliver Cromwell next?
That's beautiful, warms my heart.
A very politicized fireworks celebration. Smurfy picked the nicer articles, everyone else seems to be ripping into Sadiq Khan for a 'remain' fireworks display, or just turning the New Year celebration into a political message for his own ends -- making it all about London and not the entire UK. I don't like 3.2 mill in tax money was used as Sadiq Khan's politics when it was a time to celebrate unity in the country, he's just created more divide.

New Year 2019
Sadiq Khan angers Brexiters with pro
what divide? from what i can tell the majority of your country hates the idea of brexit, and the only "politics" involved was arranging the already purchased fireworks in a certain way
besides, with brexit, its not like your tax money would adequately fund the NHS anyway
All the negative articles were from disallowed sources (Express/Mail) when I posted the thread, I don't think Guardian or Telegraph had written anything on it yet
Half the country fighting the other over Brexit. Sadiq Khan already admitted the thing was politically motivated, this thread is a testament to that -- not that anyone on the other side of the fence really cares it was as it suits their politics. It would be nice to keep politics out of New Years celebrations and have a day off from the bickering. I suppose Mr. Khan couldn't help but aggrandise himself though. This is the same guy who also said terrorist attacks in London should be expected as 'part and parcel of living in a big city'. The guy is a nobend.
A lot of people are disheartened to see the firework display was turned into a political message. How would you feel if the fireworks were pro-Brexit?
Isn't it more half the country who doesn't want to leave the EU + the ones that wanted a Norway plus deal + those who wanted to stay in the EEA and many other splinter groups vs the tiny, tiny minority who want a no deal cut your testicles off brexit?
I think one half voted leave, one half voted remain.
The divide is very evident, maybe less so if you don't actually live in the UK -- and the only source of information r.e how it's all going is via Facepunch news posts. That - would - make it seem very one sided.
No need to be condescending. I wasn't a huge fan of this year's, end of story.
I understand that one half voted one way, the other half voted the other.
But the half that voted leave did not vote to leave in the same way, you got factions within factions there.
I really doubt you would be saying this if it was Pro-Brexit judging by your posting patterns.
No. I can't believe this is still being passed around. He didn't say terrorist attacks were to be expected, he said that cities had to be prepared for them. Here is the full quote;
“Part and parcel of living in a great global city is you’ve got to be prepared for these things, you’ve got to be vigilant, you’ve got to support the police doing an incredibly hard job. We must never accept terrorists being successful, we must never accept that terrorists can destroy our life or destroy the way we lead our lives.”
Same can be said R.E you and the others in this thread who are Pro-Remain if it was a brexit themed firework display.
heey that happened?
sweet
I think that this shouldn't have been politicized (honestly the fireworks event itself to me is a tasteless waste of money as a whole) but I don't believe you have clean intentions here, and your pretty much pathetic attempt to tar me with the same brush tells me exactly what you're trying to pull here. Not buying this cracked china, mate. Pull the other one.
Talk about a literal strawman.
But the same can be said about you though. All I have summarized that it shouldn't be politicized by Mr. Khan, wanting to paint a target on me and accusing me of being dishonest doesn't do you any favours. You agree with me, but also you just want to fight over something quite different and petty instead.
No, more like your entire argument is based around petty, semantic "B-but what about you?? huh??? Huh??? Huh??? You're hypocrites therefore my argument is superior, I win, Brexit roolz, OK?". It's fucking pedantry and you trying to take the moral high ground and say Let's Just Have A Day Without Fighting, Yeah? Give Peace A Chance is the biggest load of bull I've seen so far in the new year. You don't actually care about disarming divisionism, or setting aside differences, all you care about is taking the perceptive high road so you seem like you're morally superior for having your views, because they were upstaged in a very public fashion by a very idiotic tit.
My real opinion of this is that the fireworks show, in itself, was a crock of shite. Leave or remain, I don't give a shit, since the financial crisis I've always thought fireworks shows, especially ones put on by local governance, are an absolutely tasteless waste of money that tends to heavily disrupt people's lives even more so than Billy Chav setting off a fuckload of ilicit bangers in his garden does because they waste millions on less than ten minutes of bangy lights, security, planning, gating off of areas, pyro experts.. etc etc. It's a fucking black hole of funds that could spent literally anywhere else (event security itself for square parties and the like) to be a more worthwhile spend of money. The fact that it is politicized is just another fucking spoonful of steamy hot shite for me, helpfully fed directly into my gob by Mr. Khan. It just goes to show to me even further how little the ruling caste understands or cares about the little person and how fucking disconnected the political caste is with the average person and the needs of society, on the ground. Just even more gloss on the thick veneer of disillusionment that I've come to feel with this country's management.
But you didn't bring this up. You didn't point at this. Instead you had to immediately throw out your own shitty exceptional, divisionist little Guy Fawkes strawman of "But Thou'st Doth Not Care, For Thou Art Remain!". Poppycock. Pish and baws. You're literally just butthurt about this because it was Remain and not Leave. If it was apolitical I doubt you would have even given a singular remote fuck about the colossal waste of money the fireworks show was, all you care about is that it was "political", AKA not your politics, and therefore you can't ignore it, because you have to reflexively be upset that someone has a differing view to your own.
Except it's based upon maybe we shouldn't politicize fireworks displays and you're just going nutty professor on a mad call out post trying to oust me as the big naughty Brexit gamer instead.
Maybe you should tone down the callouts and just stick to topic.
how about both of you stop bitching at each other in public and behave like adults?
