It needs to end with Bolsonaro getting what all tyrants get.
Why do facists think in such simple terms about complex issues?
Or maybe its just that they dont care?
I honestly think the latter due to Incompetence
anti intellectuals will always insist that every problem has a simple solution and use that as a foil against the intellectuals who cannot produce simple solutions to every problem. its brutally effective like in the US the answer to a failing economy is give it a tax cut instead of say addressing the underlying socioeconomic problems and the government's role in the economy, as a means to increase the wealth of those at the bottom instead of those at the top.
Since chopping down the Amazon could potentially usher in the extinction of humanity, from rain disappearing in the region, to Co2 levels rising, to O2 levels shrinking, to a quarter of the plants used in modern medicines disappearing, couldn't NATO step in and say No, with force?
People vote for fascists because they offer a simple solution to complex problems, it's much easier to understand the solution when it's simply "minority is causing all the problems" or other similar views.
Bolsonaro is so bad I wouldn't be opposed to that. He needs to be removed from office by any means.
yes trump cares deeply about climate change
The world won't start giving a shit about climate change, at least not to the point that they will allow the use of force to do so, until large numbers of people start dying in ways obviously attributed to climate change. By which point it will probably be too late.
Until then there simply won't be public support for troops fighting and dying to defend forests, you can imagine the headlines now. "Soldier killed defending TREES? Bring back our troops!".
This
Also South America isn't Pro-America nor Pro-NATO overall
So imagine the headline "AMERICA-BACKED EUROPEAN SOLDIERS GUN DOWN WORKING CLASS WORKERS TRYING TO FEED THEIR FAMILIES ON BRAZILIAN SOIL"
Well yeah, it looks and sounds bad, but so does turning earth into a wasteland
if it ain't happening on their front door step. They won't believe it until they see it. The irony that most of the people who don't believe it also believe in a magic man in the clouds.
I think there's more to it than that. This kind of reactionary right believes that there's an accumulated baggage of left-wing reform movements that becomes restrictive on growth and fostering of corruption as the country struggles with problems. It has less to do with intellectuals and more with seeing civil society and its reforms as a burden on the country that is divisive and can no longer be afforded.
Removing barriers to the market exploiting indigenous lands is a pretty good example of this.
Naother news outlet spreading fucking lies about what happened in Brazil, contributing to the already bad image Bolsonaro has.
Firstly, he moved the affair of native lands to a ministry that deals with environment and agricultural lands. Yes, it's not ideal, but still, it's waaay better than having the matter being dealt by the ministry of justice. And second, he already said the natives will keep their lands as is, no increasing or decreasing in land size.
It's ridiculous how there's no single international news outlet that seeks to tell the truth. They know shit about how our politics is done, what is being done, and they pretend they are the "know-it-all", wise ones.
