This drop-off in vaccinations owes primarily to parental exemptions for non-medical reasons, typically because of false beliefs that vaccines cause autism or illness. There are signs the anti-vaccine movement's misinformation campaigns will strengthen in 2019, leading to further declines in vaccine coverage and possibly more outbreaks of infectious disease. Political action committees in the U.S., Italy and elsewhere are ramping up populist rhetoric about parental freedoms to enact legislation making it easier to obtain vaccine exemptions. The response to the anti-vaccine lobby by U.S. and European government agencies has been modest, leaving much of the defense of vaccines to academics. The anti-vaccine movement could also move beyond its stronghold areas into Africa, Asia, and Latin America. 2018 already saw anti-vaccine activities adversely affect child health vaccination programs in India, Indonesia and Thailand.

I can understand economically disadvantaged areas like Africa, swathes of Asia and Latin America but holy shit is it fucking astounding how the movement gained traction in the richest country in the world of all places.

I can respect poor medical practice out of pure ignorance, look at bloodletting and the history of Homeopathy. Homeopathy worked better than bloodletting because the body itself was doing the work. However this is different. We know better than to do this. We have centuries of evidence to tell us to stop doing this shit. History isn't going to look at this the same way it looks at bloodletting.

I listened to a podcast that is extremely related to this topic yesterday, I recommend it for anyone interested. Waking Up with Sam Harris - #145 The Information War with Renee Diresta. Renee was a writer for Wired before she became an analyst for the US government tracking down how exactly the anti vax conspiracy spread. It's a side conversation in a conversation about Russia interference in the 2016 election, but they talk about the Vax issue for a good 15-20 minutes and go in good depth. I believe you will learn new things from her about this subject so I highly recommend it.
