Rep. Warren Davidson (R-Ohio) reintroduced the “Buy a Brick, Build the Wall Act” Thursday which aims to direct the Treasury Department to set up a fund allowing private citizens to
make contributions to fund and maintain border walls. “Millions of Americans agree and want to chip in to help secure our borders,” Davidson tweeted.
The proposal comes as a GoFundMe campaign to collect private contributions to the border wall has raised over $18 million in the past few weeks.
The bill was initially introduced in November but was reintroduced Thursday as the new 116th Congress began its session. It is unlikely to pass in the Democrat-controlled House of
Representatives or the Senate, where it would need to break a 60-vote threshold.
Funding for a border wall has been the focal point of negotiations between Democratic Congressional leaders and the White House as a partial government shutdown nears the two-
week mark. Congressional leaders will return to the White House Friday for the second meeting this week to work out a deal, but negotiations thus far have proven fruitless.
President Trump has demanded that more than $5 billion for a border wall be included in any spending legislation to reopen the government. Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)
said this week the Democrats would offer “nothing for the wall.”
Reminder that a year ago Trump turned down $25 billion because he changed his mind and wanted even more in concessions.
Now a Republican politician is trying to get the US government to solicit fundraising for the wall like it's a car wash.
Boy, when will Americans get tired of winning?
Allowing private funding of public projects sounds like a huge ethical issue to me. Wall or otherwise, this is an awful precedent to set.
They don't care, they simply want to win.
Why do i have a bad feeling this is going to be used as a way for Money Laundering...
Remember when mexico was supposed to pay for it? Now not only do they want their base to pay for it out of pocket, our fucking government shut down because they want taxpayers, people who want none of this, to pitch in as well.
There were people in 2016 going "no that's not what he meant, the wall is a hypothetical construct" and look where we are now, lmao
Republican Congressional leadership said that a few days ago, that the wall was a "metaphor" for border security.

"NO IT'S NOT! REAL WALL! REAL WALL! FAKE NEWS! REAL WALL! I WANT MY REAL WALL DADDY"

You could've had your stupid wall a year ago but you just had to push your luck and make new demands over and above the demands Congress had already agreed to, and now look at you, begging Dems to come back and cooperate with you so you don't look weak and ineffective.
The Art of the Deal, folks.
Yeah, a metaphor, sure. Let's just ignore Trump saying it'll be made with concrete
Can I donate bootstraps?
Or thoughts and prayers?
I get the ethical issues with crowdfunded government projects, etc. but setting that aside, I'd find it fucking hilarious if the wall that Mexico was going to pay for ended up being funded entirely from the pockets of Trump supporters exclusively.
donating spare money to fund a stupid wall and then regretting not having it when you actually need it, has a nice bit of schadenfreude in it. Then again, what do I know, instead of regretting it they'll just blame the jews/mexicans/atheists/demonrats for their problems.
Great, now we can use GoFundMe for both healthcare and border security. Glad to see we've got it together.
It's worked for years for prosperity-gospel megachurches. Send the reverend Billy's college fund, he needs a new yacht and he says Jesus will come back if he gets it.
Yeah but imagine how much money they will have after all the illegals stop taking their jobs!
I always hated the "X ARE TAKING OUR JOBS" argument, X being either immigrants or machines.
Nobody is TAKING your jobs from you, your jobs are being GIVEN to these people/machines, and who's responsible for that?
And sometimes, you have to draw them a pretty picture in crayon for them to understand what you're getting at.
A wall isn't gonna do shit when Mexico starts deploying Kaiju to ferry immigrants.
I'm really scared and hope they don't do it, us libs are going to be owned so hard if they end up throwing millions of their own money into this hole
Better yet, a majority of the jobs are underhanded jobs that not one of those people using that excuse would take in a million years. They'd go on welfare before that.
They'd much rather an American citizen work for shit pay with no appreciation for doing so! (just not THEM, hell no)
Wait so what happens with all the money already privately raised from that dumb Gofundme? Just stuck in limbo until they can get some laws passed?
"I would NEVER pay for another man's healing at a hospital!"
"A big wall though? Sign me the fuck up!"
to add to this: more immigrants means more people who consume things which means more productivity is needed which means more jobs (in theory at least)
it isn't like there is a set amount of jobs in a country and if immigrants come in people will have to battle over them, the general amount of jobs increases with immigration because there are more people who consume stuff
This a pretty shallow overlook of the actual issues at hand. My main problem with illegal immigration is two-fold: It's directly impeding the ability of individuals and unions to get pay raises in part to cheaper labor, which at points is outright slave labor in certain cases of the American Southwest. The next issue I have is who is benefitting from human trafficking, and almost always that tends to be the cartels and coyotes. Both of which I reserve a pretty extreme hatred for considering the people I have seen affected by it.
Stating that this is a simple case of jimbob not getting work is underplaying the reality of the situation. These people are being brought here as slave labor. They cannot say they are here, and the idea of being deported is kept over their heads so they will not get uppity for better wages. This slave labor directly impairs the ability for legal workers to earn money in low-income areas, or the ability for them to fight for better wages. This can lead to people being put on welfare, actively seeking employment within gangs/cartels, and furthermore increasing poverty.
It is not a simple issue of Jimbob, it's an issue which effects all of us as a collective. I do not hate the people of Central America, I fucking despise the cunts that use them as slave labor and actively funnel the youth of these immigrants into a life of crime. This is a national security issue as much as an issue of morality. I cannot find it possible in my heart to just state, "Oh they are coming for a better life!" because that'd be on par with saying that the share cropping systems after the Civil War were a matter of giving African-Americans a better life.
The point is, who is hiring these people instead of local workers? Who is fueling the demand for these "slave laborers"? I don't have any crayon on me man, don't do this to me!
The rich's best trick is making the middle class believe the poor are responsible for the choices the rich make
P.much every industry is using/abusing them. This isn't something solely linked to political affiliation, it's mostly just rich people being cunts.
Finally you get it! The point was that nobody is STEALING any jobs, their jobs are given to them WILLINGLY by those who provide the jobs to begin with.
Thank christ, I'm unemployed and can't justify buying crayons ATM.
Either way, it's still a pretty big issue all around. Not only are Americans getting fucked, but even the immigrants are getting fucked via slave labor conditions.
