Could somebody educate me on why there has not been something like a class action lawsuit against YouTube for allowing copyright claim abuse? They are allowing corporations to steal money from individuals, and it has been going on for far too long.
As far as I know, it's mostly because the entire thing is automated. Copyright holders can flag whatever videos they want and it becomes a case of "guilty until proven innocent" for whoever made the video (unless it's obviously a false report).
From what I've seen, if you reach out to YouTube and explain yourself, they'll usually fix it.
However, even their counter-claims system is fucked up by automation:

haha no, youtube clearly doesn't want to do anything with pewd anymore
do you really think they are going to say no to the ad revenue pewdie brings in
They couldn't give a fuck about PewDiePie. Being called a nazi by mistake is a nono.
But inciting gambling in a channel mostly seen by early teens is A-Ok!
Channels on youtube have been taken down for far tamer offenses than the shit Pewdiepie has gotten away with.
Wait, SiIvagunner has been terminated AGAIN?
I was wondering why I am not seeing quality rips in my feed recently but didn't check for it, so I guess that's why.
Time for the TimmyTurnersGrandDad channel for rips again
Sadly, YouTube ain't gonna do shit about it, because they know we have nowhere else to go.
I'm so paranoid about this I don't want to use anything that's remotely copyrighted, but that is so difficult when our entire lives are filled with copyrighted material. You can't even accidently have a radio in the background without getting a notice.
"We recommend deleting your tweet. B-b-because it shows your public email, yeah."
Hell, you're more likely to get claimed using public domain shit than using entirely old school video game music now. That's how broken Youtube's copyright claim system is. They don't give even a fraction of a shit about whether or not people's videos are being illegally claimed and they won't do a single damn thing about it. There is no penalty system whatsoever for uploading public domain system, white noise, or beach or nature sounds to the claim system and claiming that it's your copyright.
I can't wait until a competitor comes along that actually cares.
I love that Channel! this sucks
Youtube's just too big. I honestly believe our social media landscape would be far healthier if companies like Youtube and Facebook were broken up. Would it suck at first? Yes. But would it make it more possible for things to thrive? Also yes. A decentralized ecosystem is almost always a better option because its harder to abuse.
