It has nothing to do with the vatican, and everything to do with Xi Jinping. Man is attempting to reverse every bit of progress the country has made in the last 5 decades, because he's so fucking arrogant and stupid that he envisions himself as the next Mao.
(He is, of course, seemingly unaware that being the next Mao isn't a good thing. It would undoubtedly lead to the complete collapse of China's economy through incompetent mismanagement, at the scale of which has not been seen since Mao killed 50 million Chinese because he didn't know shit about farming but bossed around the people who did.)

its just that the vatican is indulging them, which I guess short term protects chinese Catholics but they're giving the chinese government a direct line to picking the next pope which affects all catholics
China's state religion is the Communist Party, their goal ultimately is to convert or kill all nonbelievers or believers of other fates to that cult.
Under normal circumstances, you'd ask them when they last ate. However, in a communist nation, that's not really an indication.
