https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/06/trump-emergency-border-wall-government-shutdown-1082712 President Donald Trump again threatened Sunday to declare a national emergency as a means to construct his proposed wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, saying he would first gauge the results of upcoming negotiations to end a partial government shutdown triggered by partisan debate over his campaign trail promise. “I may decide a national emergency depending on what happens over the next few days,” Trump told reporters as he exited the White House en route to Camp David, according to a pool report. "We have to build the wall or we have to build the barrier. The barrier or the wall can be of steel instead of concrete if that works better,” the president said. Trump also reiterated his arguments for the building of the wall and argued without supporting evidence that many of the government workers who are not receiving their paychecks are supportive of what he is doing. "This is a very important battle to win from the standpoint of safety, No. 1, defining our country and who we are. Also from the standpoint of dollars. This wall will pay for itself many times through the course of the year,” he said.
"The barrier" doesn't really have a nice ring to it though, does it Donald?
I think we all know what it's gonna be.
man does he even have the authority to do shit like this?
Madness isn't it? To be able to call a national emergency based on political lies, when there is patently no national emergency. It's not even arguable - six months, a year down the line the 'border crisis' his base imagines will not have had any real impact on the United States apart from the damage Trump does himself with the shutdown and whatever insanity comes next. A lot has been said about a late-stage NPD sufferer like Trump with no checks and balances, and the damage he could cause. People have been worried about nukes but I think the problems lie a lot closer to home. The fact he's practically un-impeachable even when he's abusing emergency powers like an African dictator is a deeply disturbing indictment of the American system of Government.
So let me get this straight - The Wall is supposedly the be-all, end-all of border security, right? After the wall is up, the US for eternity will never have to worry about illegal immigration from Mexico ever again, correct? So let's build the fucking thing, make Trump believe that he has "solved" illegal immigration and then quietly make actual immigration reforms afterward. Yeah it's a waste of money, but he's too stupid to see the actual needs for reform and I'm sure he's too stupid as well to obstruct any measures afterward, as that would illegitimize his Wall effort.
Except it's a colossal waste of taxpayer money and hurts the environment. Let's just kick the fat fuck out of office.
1) just the process of unilaterally declaring an emergency for no reason other than congress won't fund something is putting us in a constitutional crisis 2) we already have hundreds of miles of The Wall and yet we're still here with a problem. he said the same things last year in regards to the tax cuts that it our then tax rate was a national emergency and congress needed to act to prevent millions of businesses from going bankrupt, its just now he doesn't have the same luxuries of a supportive congress and a unified government.
You say this like he would actually think his wall would ever be a waste of money under any circumstances.
I'm all for kicking him out but unfortunately there's not enough votes to impeach him and the government can't stay shut down until the next president takes office. How so? I honestly don't know the legal technicalities of this Yeah but obviously he doesn't seem to understand that. He has shown time and time again that he has no idea how ineffective just a wall is. If he thinks it's the final form of border security, then let him play with his legos and move on to other shit
The Constitution gives Congress the exclusive power of the purse, and the Supreme Court ruled in 1952 that Truman couldn't nationalize the steel industry because a strike was happening during the Korean War.
A wall will literally not fix this at all though? There are PLENTY of other ways to cross a border legally or not.
Congress, even some republicans, have been saying that for the past two years. If Trump hasn't understood that yet, he never will. I honestly don't see any other option. He's literally too stupid to deal with in this matter.
Yes, building or not building the wall is as much symbolic fight more than a practical one, but that's exactly also why it shouldn't be built. It'd be an immense win for far right racist demagogy, basicely allowing them to say "this is what the US is now". If the governement promotes institutionnal racial hatred, it justifies and normalises that hate for a lot of people. Policies of the governement has an immense impact on people and future policy - "this law exists, this is how the world is right now, so my argument is right" is an argument used all of the time in discourse. The current laws and policies of a country are the authority of the state, and that authority is immensely influencial on people. Same idea for real world buildings, public architecture is the physical authority of the governement on the lives of people, and has an immense cultural impact. Especialy something as symbolicly charged as a wall. Remember the Berlin wall? It was more than a simple physical barrier.
Just Trump taking GOP law bending to its extreme once again. I feel like when he talks about something like this for awhile it usually means he's going to back down eventually but who knows.
No, Trump has specifically said many, many times that he honestly believes this is a practical solution to border security and immigration. People need to stop assuming he's being metaphorical. Trump almost always is being literal when talking about anything.
It's like he saw Attack Of The Clones and thought "i can do that too".
You completely misread my post. I'm not saying he doesn't believe the wall is effective. I have no idea what this idiot thinks and honestly I don't care at this point. Outside of every other reasons for why the wall shouldn't be built, I'm saying him being able to build the wall would also be an immense win for his ideology, and would give it more authority. If the state institutionalises racism, racism spreads and racists are validated. The actions of the governement has way more impact than their direct physical consequences. It impacts the collective consciousness of what is that country and what that country stands for.
Wasting unfathomable amounts of money on the wall isn't going to somehow placate trump. It's just going to teach him that he can pull this kind of shit whenever he doesn't get what he wants.
Or better yet, we kick the fat fuck out of office and it isn't an issue anymore
Because there is a very likely possibility that the wall is less intended to keep illegals out and more so a huge eyesore meant to commemorate the "legacy" of Donald "Waste Of Life" Trump. The wall actually being effective would go against his apparent agenda of making a legacy for himself while profiting along the way.
An emergency of his own making.
expanding, the president has been authorized by congress to declare national emergencies through the National Emergencies Act of 1976 and congress be made aware of the costs and the exact provisions being activated. Congress has set aside funds for potential emergencies but a 5-25 billion blank check would very quickly end up in court as they would be manufacturing an emergency in this case as an end run around the law.
You're acting as if Trump has any integrity. You're imagining a scenario where Trump is "backed into a corner" logically -- where he can't say "WE NEED BIGGER WALL" or whatever because that'd be admitting he didn't "solve" the issue the first time. You're expecting that because of this logical inconsistency, he'd be forced not to demand more and more. The problem is, Trump has neither integrity nor logical consistency. He will say or demand whatever he wants whenever he wants no matter what. He has not been dissuaded in any way by being called out on his lies historically. Giving him anything is a waste of time because he will never be grateful and he will never have enough.
We better hope then that the courts don't rule in his favor, because if they do, then we officially have a constitutional crisis.
Alito, Gorsuch, and Kav will do whatever Trump wants but Thomas and Roberts aren't fans of eminent domain and Trump literally brought up "military version of eminent domain".
You're right. I completely forgot about the shitshow that was Kelo vs New London. (I was fucking living nearby when that case hit the supreme court, but I was only 12 years old and didn't follow politics) Man, that was such an embarrassing decision. For once, the conservative wing of the court was mostly right, and the liberal wing was wrong. I can't think of any other big rulings where that was the case.
"Trump is going to decide whether to ... in the next few days" This already means it's going to happen.
I almost wish that Trump would stand as an example, perhaps even a testament, to what the President of the United States of America should not do. Instead he'll probably set the precedent for what the President can get away with unless there is some serious and new checks and balances put in place to prevent the political parties from shitting over everyone if they take majority rule.
Reminds me of the Paris agreement situation a while back.
