Can't wait for Exxon to say the documents are in another country and thus immune from this decision.
The justices declined to hear Exxon’s appeal of a ruling by the top court in Massachusetts holding that state Attorney General Maura Healey, a Democrat, had jurisdiction to seek records to probe whether the company misled consumers and investors.
I mean shit it's well known at this point that these oil companies knew full well what is happening and actively worked against it.
It's there, there's no way they won't find it, unless Exxon plays its shred-to-toilet game real fucking good.
Make them invest in greener technologies to hasten the transition to renewables so we don't have to depend on fossil fuels anymore.
Shoot them for crimes against humanity.
My proposal requires them to spend their fortunes rather than hoarding it, and paves the way to getting us off of our fossil fuel dependence. It's like punishing someone for littering by making them pick up trash on the highway in the middle of August.
after the california suit its looking like we can prove they knew about it, misled about it, agree its happening now, but cannot find them liable for the damages because 'we can't know exactly how much they contributed to the problem'
This is always the worst part of all this.
There isn't enough """direct""" evidence for idiots to see the obvious
if that applies to courts all over we are universally fucked
No, it's like punishing someone for dumping toxic waste into a reservoir by making them pick up trash on the side of the highway. It's a slap on the wrist compared to the damage they've done.
No, if we're switching to toxic waste as an example it'd be like forcing them to clean up their own damned mess. That's the point of that analogy. You can't just add parts onto this analogy, it's not LEGO.
If any assholes have the capital and influence to transition us away from fossil fuels, it's the fossil fuels industry. Fining them/jailing them/shooting them isn't going to fix shit, but I'd be okay with jail time on top of requiring them to transition to renewable energy for whoever ends up in charge while the big hooby-doobies that were formerly in charge are sitting in a cell away from the comforts they obtained by effectively selling us out. They need to use their power and capital to do their part to fix this mess, as they've started it and tried to hide it to begin with.
Forcing them to invest in green solutions only means they now get priority to access to make money off the mess they made. This mess can't be abstracted into some equivalent of littering that can simply be picked up. This mess could ultimately be responsible for hundreds of millions of deaths coinciding with the collapse of our biosphere. This mess is already likely responsible for millions of deaths. This mess has already taken years off the lives of billions of people. And that's ignoring what this mess has done to the Earth itself. The companies that have done this and the people leading these companies are murderers and should be held just as responsible for their murders as any man that pulls the trigger on another.
Then lock them up, take their assets and infrastructure, and use it to push for renewable sources.
This.
People frame it as like a Marxist joke, but I firmly believe that restructuring our governments to not be the staunch protectors of neoliberalism, and then (re)nationalising energy is the only way we'll survive the impending effects of climate change.
we don't really need to nationalize everything we just have to massively overhaul how public lands and extraction rights are handled. right now its practically criminal the amount of money the government just gives away in extraction rights, most of which will not even be developed.
we need a comprehensive national energy plan that doesn't involve 'energy dominance' whatever the fuck that means,
we don't have an actual national energy plan
