Nearly 65 percent of Florida voters last November approved Amendment 4, which was crafted so it would take effect automatically, without further action needed by lawmakers. The amendment to the state's constitution applies to all felons who have done their time and completed the terms of their probation and parole, with the exception of people convicted of murder or sex offenses. Civil rights groups have maintained that Amendment 4 is self-executing, taking effect automatically on Tuesday, but just to be sure, they warned they are ready to go to court if there are any delays. Florida's incoming Republican governor Ron DeSantis came under fire after he gave an interview in December where he maintained that the amendment could not go into effect until after the state legislature took action. Florida was among four states whose constitution barred those with past felony convictions from voting and granted the governor the authority to restore voting rights, according to the Brennan Center for Justice, which was among the groups that pushed to have the amendment placed on the ballot.
Now it will be even more surprising on election night when Florida goes red
We fetishize keeping people in a cycle of problems because "they must deserve it" I voted for this. I thought it was a good idea. There are plenty of other ways the system screws them over. I feel like voting is a relatively small thing they should be still involved in as they rejoin society. I get both sides of the delay, but if it's convenient for GOP to delay it for months and months because they can sneak in another election then I'm sure they're definitely doing this for the good of the community, no doubt.
They commit a felony. They go to prison. It's been 15 years. They've been released, not given a phone, a map, a guide, or anything. They are simply expected to know how to live now. At this point, I'd just commit more crimes. I'd have no skills outside of shit I learned in prison, no matter what they are. On top of that I don't know anybody. What the fuck else do I do.
