https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/11/trump-declare-emergency-ending-the-shutdown-1098628 White House officials are warning congressional Republicans not to expect an immediate end to the government shutdown even if President Donald Trump declares a national emergency at the southern border. The warning came during Trump’s Thursday visit to the southern U.S. border, according to three sources with knowledge of those conversations. Many Democrats and some Republicans have grown hopeful that a national emergency declaration, which would allow Trump to tap Pentagon funds for a border wall, might end a political standoff that has partially shut down the government for three weeks. But Trump’s allies say the president is reluctant to hand Democrats a “win” by reopening the government after he’s invoked emergency powers. They claim that in such a scenario, Trump’s political opponents would avoid making a single concession and potentially score a major victory if the administration were to lose in federal courts as many legal experts predict. “He could say, ‘Look, I’m going to get what I want and then I’m still going to screw you,’” a former White House official told POLITICO. “It’s making Democrats feel pain instead of declaring a national emergency, opening the government up, and making it so they don’t have to give anything,” the former official added. Several sources close to Trump said senior White House policy adviser Stephen Miller has steadily urged him to use executive authority to get a wall built, and that acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney is also warming up to the idea.
Art of the deal boys, right there. Keep acting like a child and fuck over the families working for you, because you know, fuck the Dems am I right???
It's looking not out of the question that he doesn't intend to ever end the shutdown to try to sow chaos/slow the investigations
Inside the White House, Trump has been consulting with advisers on the various paths forward and the impact an emergency declaration might have on his re-election bid. A majority of Americans — 51 percent — now blame the president for the shutdown, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Tuesday, three days before hundreds of thousands of federal employees were scheduled to forego their usual paychecks. 49 percent of people polled don't think the government shutdown is Trump's fault. 49 percent. Fucking stellar.
Polls generally are showing 50-54% blame Trump, 5% blame congressional Republicans, 40% blame Democrats
literally doing all this for a fucking wall I hope he gets impeached soon
How long before a government employee has enough and just.. you know. Shoots him?
How do only 51% of americans blame Trump for the shutdown when he said himself he's taking responsibility for it and is proud to do it The fuck man
NSA/Secret service I'm just making an observation, leave me alone
51 percent sounds terrible but in a country where everything is partisan its actually sort of good, more and more people are blaming him the longer this goes on while less blame the democrats
Because a lot of Americans are sociopaths who vote Republican knowing how bad they are so they can hurt others. Trump supporter complains shutdown is 'not hurting the people he needs to be hurting'
I wouldn't say sociopaths, they're just fucking retarded. Your average republican comes in two flavors: Super rich and doesn't want poor people touching his money and Dirt floor poor and absolutely retarded, and thinks that its the icky brown people that are the reason he has no money
I'd rather he was imprisoned for something. Making him a martyr is better for his image than making him an example.
So basically "screw you America, I got what I want", eh? Not the least bit surprised if so.
Wow, so fucking over all of America to spite other Americans. This man is a goddamn traitor.
Half of people have below average intelligence.

The shutdown is now beginning to affect more and more people, with the threat of even more on the near horizon, and the Trump administration is asking various federal agencies to figure out whatever they can do to mitigate the practical effects of the shutdown on the economy and the people, such as telling the IRS to process tax returns even during the shutdown. Trump started this fire, and now he is having to apply damage control to keep it from hurting the wrong people. Democrats can just sit back and watch things burn, solution in hand for whenever the President stops being a petulant baby and backs down from his wall suicide pact. And, of course, McConnell could end this anytime, but he's being a lamedick turtle hiding in his shell waiting for Trump to choose a more reasonable demand. The art of the deal, everybody. The shutdown is going to last as long as it takes for Trump to find a way to get out of this mess he's created for himself without backing down and appearing weak. He needs an out to save face, he has zero right now, and the Democrats are in no mood to offer him one. This isn't even about the wall, anymore, it's about Trump proving he's not a useless failure by getting some kind of win.
So now he's throwing the entire GOP under the bus for his stupid wall project.
Democrats not offering him a way out is the greatest fucking gift he's given them, ever lmao Nothing has worked against him, he's been untouchable. Now he just handed them the perfect ace in the hole.
There is one thing still running despite the shut down: Despite Shutdown, Trump Administration Continued Effort To Expan..
It really feels like trump could nuke America by accident because why not and a third of whoever survived would still not blame him for it even if he tweeted himself literally pressing the button. This has been going for almost two years now. Actually impressive.
There's already a huge problem with farms losing money due to the tariffs. Losing money due to the shutdown is only going to make things harder. These farms are going to go bankrupt, and then they'll have no choice but to sell to the first megacorporation that comes knocking. Americans near these farms will see another hit to their local economy as these farms stop participating in the local economy and begin serving the corporation which serves the national economy.
This almost seems like shooting himself in the foot, beyond what he's done previously. If he declares an emergency in an attempt to fund the wall he loses what little reason he has to keep the shutdown up. Sure, he can say it'll stay down in case the emergency fails to stand in court but until that actually happens anyone still on the fence may just say "well he's found a way to get the money, why is it still shut down?".
It's America we're talking about. His supporter base will find an excuse for him.
So what happens when airports shut down and farms lose all their subsidies?
can't get impeached if you collapse the American government beforehand
We're basically fucked How much? I have no idea, but quite fucked
Some airports are already closing a number of their terminals, which is congesting the other ones remaining open.
When do states start looking to secede if a shutdown goes long enough
Why would a state secede? They would lose so much.
