Apparently the deal in the Labour party is that if Corbyn can't topple the PM with this vote of no confidence and trigger a general election then he has to throw his full support behind a second referendum.
So it is possible that both May and Corbyn could be in for a very messy week.
I'd love this to be true. I can respect that Corbyn actually seems to have convictions and beliefs, but those beliefs aren't what the opposition and the nation need right now.
I cannot confirm if it is true or not, it is a rumor I have heard floating about from people who are far more learned about this whole situation and the current standing of the Labour party than I am.
But given his own personal stance on Brexit verses the overwhelming view of his party and that he has been talking about a general election to an increasing degree and to an increasing volume these past few weeks it wouldn't surprise me if it is true.
The truth of the matter is that, regardless if the rumour is true in the event he looses this no confidence vote it is highly likely that there will be calls for a leadership election in his party. Whilst it is commendable that he sticks by his beliefs it would be a major risk to put those personal beliefs over the views and opinions of the majority of the party.
His party's motto as we know is "For the many, not the few" and it would be somewhat hypocritical if he put his (and apparently only 25% or so of his party) views ahead of the majority of his party's view.
Holy shite, Times reports that pro-EU backbenchers have their own plans and will try to strip the government of control over Commons business and then maybe cancel Brexit

The Blimeyometer is at a whole Half Crikey, chaps.
Why not skip the whole vote of no confidence thing and go straight to supporting another referendum, and actually oppose the government
I'm just picturing May giving that signature evil grin saying "nope. You're gonna die"
Because not trying to at least try to bring forward some sort of Brexit deal would be party suicide. Labour will try to put forward a Brexit deal that meets it's six tests, failing this will see Labour almost certainly backing a 2nd public vote.
Labour can't just betray the North, it's biggest base, easily as that. It's in a very tough situation but opposing Brexit completely before trying to find a reasonable outcome is not going to do anyone any favours, the North would vote for the Tories in droves and we'll get Brexit anyway.
Keep in mind, there's no real brexit exit that can meet Labour's six tests, assuring that if they do get into power Brexit is almost certainly not happening.
The problem with a no confidence vote is that we don't really have time for an election before article 50 drops. Whilst we'd also need an extension for a referendum, the EU are more likely to give us one for that. This makes a vote of no confidence not necessarily make sense to MPs. The only thing which makes me wonder if it might pass is if these backbenchers think they can get enough votes to wrest control from the government, they might well think they have enough votes to form a cross party government in the event of a no confidence vote.
another general election (as much as I fucking hate her) would completely fuck up current negotiations with the EU, its just a awful idea
What negotiations? EU has been pretty clear that they're not going to negotiate any more which is fair enough. Also I'm not really happy about Labour being in charge if Corybn is still in charge considering he wants to do the same shit as May regarding Brexit.
This post, a lot.
I live in the Labour heartland and let me tell you something, the people here actually ARE stupid enough to vote Tory if they think that'll get the muslims out. And then wonder why all their hospitals are closing, schools are running out of funds, roads in serious disrepair etc.
In the snap election, our area MP made the fatal mistake of advertising that they were a "proud Remainer". This is a person who has fought tooth and nail to prevent further cuts to education and public spending for our town, as well as wrestle the government into giving large industrial contracts to our industrial estate. The Tories have often said that they simply do not care about our town, because we don't vote for them. BUT, because he was a traitor ReMOANer Remainer, the Tory candidate who was A) a fresh Uni graduate B) had never held public office C) not from our area in the slightest, almost managed to unseat him. How? I'll tell you: Brexit Brexit Brexit Brexit Brexit Brexit Immigrants Are Bad, Labour Are Traitors Brexit Brexit Brexit Brexit Brexit.
I would seriously advise people to temper their expectations with Labour. If they lose the Northern vote, then the Tories will win, because people here are fffffffffffffffffffffffffucking idiots who can't see past what's put in front of them.
Thing is, for people who don't have the level of intelligence that perhaps many of us in this forum enjoy, they're always going to be one issue voters as that's about all they can think about. And the most prominent thing their (predisposed to racism, perhaps) minds go to right now is perceived migration or 'invasion' by other cultures, sometimes hostile cultures. West Yorks is an extreme example but Birmingham is also pretty awfully segregated between rich and poor, white and black, I expect London is in parts too, and the level of animosity is not a good thing at all. Until the one-issue race voters feel that something's been done, the Tories still have a surprisingly high vote share, though it's all one-issue whereas the grassroots Labour movement are very multi-faceted, so much so that many millenials still support a Brexit-devoted Corbyn.
It honestly confounds me how moronic the electorate are around here, all because they're stupid enough to believe and revere everything the tabloids tell them. They will actively vote against their own interests out of ignorance still thinking after ten years that the next Conservative MP/Councillor will be looking out for them despite evidence to the contrary.
It's a shame that our electoral system works as it does or I guarantee there would be more LibDem councillors and MPs around here instead of just a choice between Labour or Conservative.

Here's the culprits. Two of the most popular newspapers in the North region, and the biggest newspapers in the country, actively ordering their readers to vote Conservative.
The Wolf Times telling the Sheep to vote for the Wolves Eating Sheep Party.
Enemy of business? Finally.
Massive tax hikes? We've needed those for years.
Puppet of unions? Good, we need more unions with more power.
Marxist extremist? Is that a bad thing?
I'm not disagreeing with you, probably should have worded that better
