So what do you want to see in the next Half-Life game?
a release date before the heat death of the universe would be a good start
alright very cool next please
At this point a miracle that makes Valve realise people still wanting to do stuff on GoldSrc and Source, so they call reputed modders to replace the copyrighted parts of the engine in order to make legal a full code release. The sound part ( Myles ) can be easily replaced with FMOD as many mods did, the physics for Source is the one that might be a hard rock to break, but nothing is impossible if you have a dream...
There was a Vphysics replacement project for Garry’s Mod on this forum a few years ago. It got pretty far.
Just make it exactly as it was planned in 2007 - using Epistle 3 plot and HL2 assets. Now that would weird as hell.
FMOD's license was changed to prohibit its use in non-commercial projects if it's a game engine. If it's commercial then it will cost Valve to license it out, unless they can use the Indie license: https://www.fmod.com/licensing https://www.fmod.com/resources/eula/ OpenAL on the other hand has no such restrictions, but you'll have to implement file loading yourself. Not terribly hard but it's harder that it seems. It is definitely possible though.
Yea I have mentioned the Bullet physics project several times in the past as well, so is without a doubt a doable thing. Just needs a team this time rather than a single person working on it.
Not necessarily the next Half Life, but I would like to see Blue Shift redone with a somewhat System Shock-esque/Arkane approach to it... So think stuff like keycards, passcodes, emails and audio logs. non-linear world, resource scarcity, can't/shouldn't always fight through a situation. I'm imagining that from getting off the tram to getting to the old teleportation labs would be much shorter, and that's where it opens up. Barney would be given tasks/quests to do stuff like find Dr. Rosenburg and escort him back, or charge the battery/start the generator. Along the way doing optional stuff like helping other survivors, finding extra gear, general little quests that help like activate/reprogram turrets or something. One for sure I think would be finding an HEV suit. As the game progress the whole situation is obviously getting worse, with stronger aliens teleporting in, increasing Xenification of the facility and the military arrival. I would probably leave Xen to the end of the game the same. You'd have to redo basically all the gameplay like introduce stealth-lite, inventory, redoing the AI, redoing the maps to be sensibly cohesive. Basically a new game. Basically I want Half-Prey.
Really? that's really shitty from them but explains why it was made hard to download it for free. As for OpenAL I think in some places like Doom modding or OpenRA is used, so I guess is a matter of asking around. Then again, it implies Valve allowing this to begin with.
Valve won't even tell us what's stopping them from releasing the source code, so getting them to cooperate on that level is pretty much impossible. Maybe if we ask the guy who took over maintenance we can get some answers, but i don't expect anything will change.
IDK, I have heard at this point so many different stuff from different people that could be everything or nothing ( VAC hooks being present on closed side, private sound/physics engine, not a direct code available on their repos... ).
Or they could finish Source 2 and have it so that you can replicate any version of of Half-Life to your heart's content on it, graphics, physics (or lack there-of) and all.
Not sure if this is appropriate but... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZ8nkQGrjiI
To answer SoloKiller's "Is that... legal?" question over the MI Steam release. Yes. Back when the mod was first released, it wasn't sanctioned by Valve, being described as "illegal content", and its Valve Developer Community article was quickly deleted, with the deletion logs having been purged to hide this. Additionally, no official permission was ever been given for the redistribution of modified versions of the original leaked material. Later on, some guy ended up asking Steam Support about this back in July 2009, only for Valve to reply with "The mod is not illegal to download and play as long as it is just a mod." And in October of that year, the Valve Developer Community article was restored and has never been deleted since. Since then, besides the waiting time between July 2018 and now for the Store Page and Game Release submission tickets, Valve has offered virtually zero resistance to the game (or at least, that we know of).
I don't think Blue Shift is a really necessary part of the equation here. Just do what Echoes did and have another perspective on the Black Mesa incident. Hell, maybe we'll finally get to play as the lowly janitor or something, I dunno. Someone more vulnerable where alternative methods like sneaking past enemies or doing something equivalent to hacking to open up new passages makes sense as opposed to outright shooting everyone. The game could be set largely in the newer, more high-tech areas of Black Mesa as a contrast to the other games being set largely in the older, more run-down areas. It would also help make audio logs lying around be more believable since presumably they would be used by the scientists working there to log findings and such.

MMod and the Juniez models have really gotten a few HL2 skin makers active on Gamebanana this past week.
Hey @Cyril , some russian website made a short article about your mod, but it's more about AI really: http://www.gametech.ru/news/62322/ Wich I asume resulted in burst of russian viewers and commets on your YouTube video, such as this one wich roughly translates as: I think he moving around so fast on purpose, so you couldn't see any difference. It seems like they made this video by just bluring left side.
yo i know im late but that mmod stuff is cool as hell
Anyone else have a love-hate relationship with Opposing Force? Like, I really enjoyed it right up until the Race-X stuff. The Race-X stuff just doesn't fit in properly. If someone were to recreate it with Race-X being a Combine scouting force it would work, but at the moment it's a bit cringy.
I like their designs, they're cool to fight, but they fuck the lore sideways, I agree. If you made them a combine scouting force, that has its own issues since the final boss is Shep preventing them from entering Earth en masse, iirc.
Well yeah, rewriting them as a Combine scouting force means a lot of reworking of the plot. For now I treat everything up to Race-X and the nuclear explosion ending as canon.
I honestly never gave a shit about how Race X fit into lore, and just loved new weapons, new enemies, new mechanics like rope swinging
They pretty much have to be a third faction, they can't be Combine because Race X has mastered local teleportation to the point where their infantry can teleport at-will, and the Combine's sheer incompetence at local teleportation is an extremely vital plot point in Half-Life 2.
Finally had a chance to play MMod. It's.. okay? All of the additions outside of the new models and animations are kind of awful.
Race X is a previously unknown alien race beyond Xen (nothing's native to Xen, as we know) that detected the portal storms and wanted the Earth's natural resources. In fact, this premise is nearly identical to the Combine's except it was written years in advance. Is Marc Laidlaw a hack fraud? 🤔
Maybe it's true, they saw a fresh new world wanted in on the action, but then-
I literally said rewriting.
