Adamowicz is a powerful liberal voice in a country that has been governed by the rightwing Law and Justice party since 2015. He is best known in Poland and internationally as a staunch supporter of LGBT rights and the rights of migrants and refugees during a period of rising anti-migrant sentiment. “I am a European so my nature is to be open,” Adamowicz told the Guardian in 2016. “Gdańsk is a port and must always be a refuge from the sea.”

Christ. The stabber blamed the mayor's former political party for jailing him because of his own acts of violence... so to prove that he didn't deserve to be jailed for violence, he murders a man. What a sad man.

I'm surprised this isn't more major news. I'm seeing a lot of parallels between this and when Jo Cox was killed; both politicians who were outspoken liberals killed by anti-EU far right activists.

But it wasn't ideologically charged murder. Stabber was probably schizophrenic, blamed former ruling party for imprisonment (claimed now to be innocent for 5 armed bank robberies, to which he confessed guilty few years earlier), and killed Mayor from that party (and it happened that the Mayor was more left-wing than usual here). Murderer liked some right-wing politicians on facebook, but his likes also included Pride March. So I wouldn't call it right-wing attack, it was probably act of lunacy.

the far right are lunatics, though. the vast majority of all terrorist attacks in the US post 9-11 for instance were from far right extremists. there's no reason to try to stretch this to something it isn't, but I mean...

I agree in general, but in this case we have guy who apparently: robs few banks for ~1000-2000$ each at age of 22 spends all money vacations get caught on many CCTV and soon after by the Police confess to crime spends 5 years in prison, where he starts to believe to be innocent and to be framed by politicians of ruling party leaves jail and attacks a Mayor, and afterwords says to the crowd: "Hello! Hello! My name is S____ W_____, I was jailed but innocent. Civic Platform (former ruling party) tortured me, that's why Adamowicz just died." (exact quote, I was there) And he don't have any records of being right wing than likes for few politicians, who are considered to be right wing, but not the extremists ones. Even The Guardian states that there no evidence for that attack to be politically motivated, so it's just weird to me to see some users calling him Far-right nutwit who's paranoid of Migrants.
