As much as Russia likes to meddle in other countries' political affairs, you can't just assume that they are behind every major right-wing group there is, especially considering AfD is a large enough party to recieve significant state subsidies from the German federal treasury.
I hate Russia and the far-right as much as anyone here but all this obsession over Russian plots isn't exactly good optics. Frankly it seems to detract attention from the socioeconomic issues that are empowering the far-right to begin with.
Well they are apparently backed by the Russian media and pretty much the entirety of the 5% of Germans who speak Russian. So I don't think it's a long-shot to say they're influenced, directly or otherwise, by Kremlin.

Sure, I can agree with that it is in Russia's geopolitical interests to lend their support to far-right movements abroad in an effort to destabilize their political opponents om an international scale. AfD basically worked off of PEGIDA's momentum and have more or less swallowed up their supporters now. They secured their state funding by 2013 so if they suddenly got an influx of cash it must've been between 2015-2017. But if that came from Russia that only proves Russia exploited the already existing situation for their own gain. There would still be a fascist creep growing regardless of their influence.
Nor did I suggest they should, but don't assume that it can't happen.

There is evidence that Putin has his hands in everything from the NRA to Nigel Farage and UKIP. It is not narrow-minded or insane at all - especially given that the Soviet Union of old aided literally every communist uprising during the Cold War.
