An appeal backfired when in December the court ordered a retrial after prosecutors claimed new evidence showed Schellenberg played an important role in drug trafficking operations. The sentence is expected to escalate diplomatic tensions between China and Canada. The Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, said Ottawa would continue to “engage strongly” with Beijing.
Do these internationals ever actually get the death penalty or is this normally just a diplomatic bargaining chip for china
In truth I feel that the 15 year sentence was overturned and put into a death sentence solely because of what Canada did with Huawei's CEO's daughter (sp?). China has been known to throw temper tantrums and ostracize everything and anything that doesn't give them what they want. Which is to act with impunity over most things.
Quite grim, China has a real hatred for drug smuggling into their country. Much of their foreign policy and international affairs are shaped by the opium war and the forced importation of heroin into their country.
I can see how this won't do well with relations between China and Canada. And I understand that drug charges are pretty bullshit most of the time. But I don't get why people still try to bring drugs into Asian countries when they know how strict they are about most drugs.

Because the more strict it is, the better price they can get if they don't get caught. But gambling with your life in any manner is just plain stupid no matter how much money potential there is.
You do this every time you get into your car to go to a job, though.
