With special thanks to all of our friends and colleagues at PlayStation, we are thrilled to announce that starting RIGHT NOW, Rocket League has entered the PlayStation Cross-Play Beta program! Players on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Steam can now randomly matchmake with or against each other in all Online match types (i.e. Casual, Competitive, and Extra Modes).
To make sure that Cross-Platform play is enabled (it is by default), head to the "Main Menu," select "Options" and then make sure the "Cross-Platform Play" box is checked in the "Gameplay" tab. And that's all there is to it. You are now ready to play against gamers on other platforms across the world!
But what about cross-platform parties? In our first update this year (more information coming soon), we will release our cross-platform party system, which allows you to partner up with friends on any platform with the push of a few buttons.
Rocket League is basically the UN of video games now.
It was the game they "trialed" the cross-play system with.
Despite the fact that Rocket League had enabled it beforehand.
Epic tried to pressure Sony, and for one brief period of time they "accidentally" did it to show that it works perfectly fine. Eventually Sony caved and added it, albeit it's still "in beta".
It does.
They should look at the last couple of years big exclusives and get developers to add crossplay. Games like Monster Hunter World's, Destiny 2 etc would really benefit from it
This will be so good for tournaments!
It's a real pain in the ass to organize it and drawing a line in the sand at either:
PC / PS4 or PC / XBOX / Switch
Rocket ID will make it even easier down the track.
God they really need this for Monster hunter World. One thing I really hate from moving to new consoles is now the community is broken up across 3 platforms
Same for RDR2 PS4 and Switch crossplay please :^)
For Destiny 2, please only for console. Playing with PC players would ruin Destiny 2 multiplayer for console unless it was an option to switch it off due to the inherent easier aim from mouse and keyboard, PLUS the fact that titanskating is easily macro-able on PC.
Can you tell if you are playing with players from another platform?
Wait I thought it had ps4 cross play already? So the psy net avatar can mean anything
PS4, in all its infinite prestige as the absolute champion of Gen8, has long considered it undignifying to associate with its conquests in the console space. For years, it has deigned to only cross-play with PC as it is not a direct competitor, and even then only begrudgingly as it would rather all PlayStation Gamers socialize solely with other PlayStation Gamers, as PS4 and PS4 alone is The Place to Play. This has left PC with a choice to either cross-play solely with the one worthy console, or to fraternize with the defeated systems as freely as it wishes so long as it doesn't sully the PS4's domain with their presence as it does so. Thus, PC/PS4 has long been the only form of cross-play acceptable for PlayStation.
It took a pair of Switch-shaped pliers to pry Sony's head out of its own ass, due to voices of everyone wanting to cross-play on the go getting too loud to ignore.
Just make it selectable, so you can at least play with your friends on console if they want. No reason not too.
Other platforms are given a blue/orange PSYNET avatar coloured; You can't tell specifically which console they are on, but if you do a quick check of their username on a stats website, you can narrow it down pretty quick.
I am pretty sure Minecraft has a even bigger cross platform
It does, but bear in mind that the big cross-play pool for Minecraft doesn't include PS4 yet either. To cross-play you need to be on the Bedrock branch, and a prerequisite for getting onto Bedrock is being okay with cross-playing with everyone. And last I check the most recent talks about getting PS4 on Bedrock was during their "PC and/or other PlayStation systems only" phase.
How do friendlists work with cross platform play? Can you add someone on your PS4 if they have an XBOX one if you're in the same lobby?
They have an in-game party system coming out soon-ish that should enable invites, parties, matchmaking and all that with any console. So no, you can't party up across consoles yet. It's only cross-play right now in the sense that you can be matched against players on any console when playing online.
Rocket league is the first by years though, I remember a story about them accidentally enabling cross platform years ago.
I don't want to be that guy but just keep in mind that Sony is only doing this because they got ass blasted.
It's so stupid. This whole situations is ass-backwards with companies keeping real features out of games to push more console sales.
Wouldn't it be better to have it be cross play on all platforms everywhere but PvP, where its just consoles that have cross platform?
That'd be good, and make it so you can opt in/opt out of console/pc pvp. And if you play with pc as console, it tries to get an equal amount of pc players on both teams.
I love how /r/PS4 tried to bend over backwards to show that it's not importnant, or how no one cares about this.
It amazes me that people still defend their brand of plastic box to the death
Having owned all PS consoles, I've occasionally been called an "xbot" for arguing against dumb claims playstation fanboys make
