After launching on November 28th, 2018, Valve’s latest game Artifact saw a rapidly dwindling player base within only a few weeks. We reported back on December 6th that the player-
base had lost 60% of players in its first week. However, almost a month and a half later, that number is in a much more concerning place.
Artifact hit a new low this morning, according to SteamCharts – at midnight (GMT) earlier today the game reportedly saw its lowest ever player count of 1,639 players.
In less than two months since launch, the game has lost around 97% of its player-base, a staggering decline particularly for a game created by one of video game’s most revered
developers. Despite releasing a major update on December 21st, the player numbers only spiked for around a week before returning to similar levels. This update added the ability for
players to level up their account and receive rewards, such as card packs, for free.
At this point we’re not sure what the future holds for Artifact. Valve have been known to bring back games from a bleak outlook, such as Counter Strike: Global Offensive which saw its
player-base skyrocket from an average of around 30,000 players to an all-time peak of over 850,000 back in 2016.
I'll try to care.
Oops, it's not working.
Good.
lmao fuck you valve
Hopefully the landing doesn't kill Icarus and he'll get off his ass and make some actual games when he brushes himself off.
Anyone got the comparison with Battlefront 2?
My grandma used to belive (or still believes) that when a shitload of people put their will into a desire for something, it can affect reality.
I know its bullshit, but there is something about the idea that its the collective angst of all half-life fans that is making this game fail that is very appealing to me.
Reminds me when people were posting updates about Battleborn's and Lawbreakers' player numbers. Wouldn't have thought this would happen to a new Valve game.
What makes this interesting this is their first original competitive game (since Ricochet :p). This isn't built on an mod with an established community and competitive scene outside of the lore being tied to Dota, so I was wondering how it would do. Well...
I've seen this kind of thing enough times for it not to be somewhat viable in my own head.
Considering things like Battlefront 2 and now Artifact, maybe it's not all that entirely wrong.
I mean don't expect that hope to extend into everything, but considering that the effects that
has impacted the publishers and developers behind these projects in some significant way.
Battlefront 2 : being the catalyst for the demise of the lootbox
Artifact : the face of ire for Valve fans
A lot of it being the collective will of individuals. It's all fascinating ( and liberating ) to lay witness to.
UK Tag.
It checks out.
Ah, so she wuz one uv dem sneeky gitz, eh?
I mean looking at steam charts on my phone (which is a pain), it’s not even too far off battleborn. Impressive.
It’s a shame it had to come to this.
Years late to release a game in a niche genre with a pay model that is the worst of f2p AND premium, what could go wrong?
I wonder what is Artifact's Half life, and how it compares to other valve games.
The writing was on the wall arguably since Sniper vs. Spy a decade ago.
Well, let's look at the evidence:
Don't drive da red wunz
Iz an old git
Old gotz luv tradishun
Must be one o dem Snakebite gitz.
This is the game they released/announced on Half-life bday right?
This is the ghost of Gordon gettin' his revenge.
But our collective desire for a sequel to HL2 EP2 never materialised
Do you want modern Valve anywhere near Half-Life? Need I remind anyone how BG&E2 ended up because people kept asking despite what Ubi (well, AAA games as a whole) had become?
this makes me happy.
It was the open beta for Artifact that started on HL1's birthday, in which they also proceeded to do absolutely nothing to celebrate Half-Life's 20th anniversary. It was depressing.
We can always hope for Project Borealis.
Nice try Terminator, we're not telling you where John Connor is
You mean the game that's not even out, doesn't have a release date, and has barely been shown ?

I never thought I would see the day where I'm happy that one of Valve's games fail, but here I am.
